Title: Natalie's Problem
Author: Kal
Rating: PG (for now)
Natalie awoke to the sound of muffled giggles and the bedroom door creaking shut. “They’re at it again…” she thought as she rolled over and tried to fall back asleep. Jo and Blair had been acting like this for a few weeks now. Their constant banter had turned from insulting and sharp to flirtatious and funny, they were always disappearing at the same time to go and do some “forgotten chore” together, and on several occasions Nat had heard them get out of bed to sneak downstairs like they were doing tonight. Mrs. Garrett and Tootie seemed to be oblivious to what was going on, but Nat knew. She saw the way they looked at each other and noticed what their hands were up to under the dinner table when they sat beside one another. They had become lovers.
“I can’t believe no one else has noticed!” Natalie thought as she lay staring at the two beds left empty. “I guess they are probably just happy to not have to hear Jo and Blair at each others throats all the time anymore…” As she tried to fall back asleep, Nat couldn’t stop her mind from wandering to what might be going on downstairs. She pictured Blair lying back on the sofa… Jo unbuttoning her blouse… their bodies pressing against one another. In her mind she saw Jo run her hands through silky blonde hair and pull Blair in for a passionate kiss. Natalie whimpered and felt a dull pain grow in her chest. It made her sick.
Cold water splashed across Natalie’s face and washed away the tears as she looked up from the sink and into the bathroom mirror. “Ugly” She whispered to herself as she stared at her own reflection. “You’ll never have what she has.” She choked a bit as those words came out and took a few minutes to tame her emotions before quietly returning to her bed. She waited for a while hoping her older friends would return. After an hour they hadn’t, but exhaustion finally pulled her into a restless troubled sleep.
“Nat! Wake up! You’re gonna miss breakfast and Mrs. G made your favourite!” Tootie yelled as she shook her best friend.
Natalie groaned and pulled the blanket over her head. “Go away Tootie!”
“Come on! Blair and Jo are already downstairs and their gonna finish all the pancakes if we don’t hurry up.” Tootie shook harder.
“OK, ok. Go ahead, I’ll be down in a minute.”
“Alright, but if there’s none left when you get down there don’t come crying to me!” Tootie responded and quickly left the room.
“Where’s Nat?” Jo asked with a mouth full of pancake.
“Don’t ask me. I tried to get her up but she won’t get out of bed. She’s being all grumpy.” Tootie replied.
“That’s not like Natalie… She never misses breakfast. Especially not when we’re having pancakes. Is she feeling alright?” Blair asked in a concerned tone.
“She’s been acting weirder and weirder the past couple weeks. I don’t think she’s sick but I can’t get her to talk to me about what’s bothering her.” Tootie sounded slightly annoyed. The way her best friend had been acting was strange, and it hurt Tootie that she wouldn’t open up to her. As Natalie got progressively more depressed, Tootie was getting more frustrated at not knowing what was going on and not having an opportunity to help.
“Maybe something happened to upset her. Can you think of anything?” Blair asked. Natalie was usually so chipper. Her recent behaviour had been way out of character for the normally happy-go-lucky girl and Blair was starting to worry. “I’ve noticed something’s not right. The other day she wouldn’t even look me in the eye. Something has got to be up.”
“Well I can’t think of anything… and usually I’d be the first to know! I’ve tried every sneaky trick I know of to find out what’s wrong, but I haven’t come up with anything!” Tootie exclaimed.
“You mean Eastland’s most infamous snoop can’t dig up any info on her best friend?” Jo teased.
“She stopped writing in her diary ages ago and she…” Tootie was cut short as the fourth girl entered the dining hall in her pyjamas.
“Well look who finally decided to grace us with her presence! Morning sunshine.” Jo joked at Natalie who looked like she’d just risen from the dead. “You don’t look so hot, Nat. Bad sleep, or did you get into Mrs. G’s rum stash last night?” Jo winked at her friend as she passed her a plate.
Natalie sat down and picked a spot on the table to stare at as she mumbled “Nightmare. Didn’t sleep well.”
Jo spoke a bit softer as she dished out a pancake and poured a glass of orange juice for her friend. “Aw, sorry Nat. Some breakfast aught to perk you up.”
“Just the juice, thanks.” Natalie responded, her eyes never leaving the table.
The other three girls shared puzzled glances before Blair chimed in. “Anything you want to talk about?”
“Not really, just nightmares. I’d like to forget about it.” Natalie sipped her juice never once looking up at the concerned faces of her friends.
“You gotta eat!” Jo attempted once more to put a full plate in front of Natalie, only to have it pushed away.
Tootie urged her friend to talk. “YOU, not wanting food? Nat, what’s wrong? Come on, you know you can tell us, we’re your closest friends!”
“Listen, just leave it ok? I’m going upstairs to get dressed.” Natalie nervously replied. She finished her juice, faked a smile, and headed for the stairs.
The other three girls sat quietly looking confused until they were sure she was gone. “See!?” Tootie exclaimed. “Nothing! She won’t say anything! Not even to me, and she usually tells me everything!”
“Ok, Tootie… calm down. We’ll get this figured out.” Jo just wished she knew how. She hoped it wasn’t anything too serious. She thought of herself as a big sister to the younger girls and took it upon herself to look after them. If there were anything she could do, she’d want to know about it.
“Mrs. Garrett will be back later. Maybe she will be able to talk to her. Until then I guess we’ll just have to go about our day. Tootie, Jo and I have an errand to run in town. While we’re gone just keep trying to see what you can find out. Don’t push her too hard though, we don’t want to upset her anymore than she already is.” Blair got up to get her jacket and was quickly followed by Jo who helped her put it on before dawning her own leather coat and giving Tootie a smile and a pat on the back.
“It’ll be alright Kiddo, you’ll see.”
“Ok guys. I’ll do what I can. See you later.”
“Bye Tootie.” Blair flashed her famous Warner smile before heading out the door.
Upstairs in the bedroom a swollen-eyed girl watched painfully out the window as the athletic brunette gently placed a motorcycle helmet on the beautiful blonde’s head. She saw them pause for a moment face to face as a manicured hand came up to graze the cheek of the beaming tomboy in the driveway. As they straddled the bike she could see the passenger pull her arms around the driver and rest her chin on the shoulder of the worn leather jacket as they rode off together towards town.
“They are perfect together.” She said to herself. “All these years how could I have been so stupid to wish that a fat silly girl like me might have a chance with someone as wonderful as Blair Warner?” With that thought, Natalie’s heart let out a cry of agony and she slumped down to the floor and let the sobs rip through her body once more.
