A/N: I dedicate this to my grandmother, the one who actually did this when she was younger. Her hair wasn’t as long as Mei’s, she claims it’s like mine, down to the hips, but she was the basis for the story and gave me the idea. Ironically, when my parents later bought a sauna (not as grand as you might think. It looks like a wooden telephone booth and can only fit one person unless you want to be awkwardly pressed up against someone) it actually recommended putting oils in your hair while sitting inside being purged.
Long days in Ling’s court always left Mei making a beeline for the hot springs. Her shoulders and legs would ache from having to sit up in proper position and warm water that would make her body weak and feeling as new and clean as a new-born baby seemed so appetizing.
Rubbing her hair with various oils that would leave her hair soft and shiny, she couldn’t help wondering whether she should cut her hair shorter. She left that for later contemplation. She braided her hair and put it up on top of her head with a clip. The look making her look like a grand lady. She twirled in front of the mirror, laughing at her hair before making her way out to the hot springs, a few servants following to collect her clothing before she entered.
By the time Mei pulled herself out of the water to leave she was dizzy from the heat and all she wanted to do was curl up in her bed and sleep. As she climbed out, the length of her hair’s fate was sealed. With the weight of the humidity in the air and the oils in her hair, the clip-- already under a great amount of strain-came undone.
Her hair was cut while she lay in bed on her stomach, second degree burns tracing down her entire back side. Having a burn mark on her rear wasn’t, as one could imagine, very dignified.
