You like him best when he’s asleep, his raven hair no longer slicked or combed but sticking up at odd ends on the pillow as his awkwardly splayed limbs take up most of the double bed. Sometime during the night, you are convinced there is a magical moment when that happens. How else can you explain going to sleep in his arms and waking up to find yourself curled at the edge of the mattress, fitting yourself around the spaces he has left unoccupied on your simple bedcovers.
Very soon, the sun will rise and bars of light will creep across his sleeping face through the window, trying to irritate his eyes as they fight for a moment longer, to hold on for one more second to the bliss that is dreamless sleep. Very soon, you will pad out of the room in your soft slippers and his shirt to put on the coffee. And another day will start.
The boy you see now will turn into a man.
But not for a little while longer.
You creep softly to the window, pulling the heavy curtains across the grill. There is much the man has to do, but for now, the boy in your bed needs his rest. You resume your silent vigil by his side, guarding him in his slumber.
