The words exchanged between them were sparse, clipped with professionalism and devoid of emotion. They have learned to communicate through silences more than sounds.
Years together and apart have taught them the dangers of knowledge, the importance of duty, the discretion that now clings to them like a second skin.
They had always known the path they’d chosen would be difficult. Years and years of being unable to truly express themselves have left them unsure of how to at this point in their lives. The façade of ineffectual military conduct has become a part of them as much as they a part if it.
So then, how the hell does everyone still know?
