There are so many different ways to write first-time scenes, aren't there? I think the most realistic ones have to grapple with the fact that it has taken them so many years to make the attempt, which means there must have been a high barrier in place, and fear seemed like the most logical one to me.
I especially liked Foreman and Chase's reactions.
Hee, me too! This scene started as the following fragment:
Masters paused mid-sentence and frowned, her eyes fixed just below my jawline. “Dr. House, is that a- oww!” She turned and glared at Foreman, whose face was set in a determinedly bland expression.
“Sorry,” he said. “Foot slipped.”
It took two more months for me to figure out what to do with it.
I also wonder if alternatealto is correct and that maybe he had something to do with the accident?
It's really enjoyable for me to watch my readers try to solve the mystery before House does!
