When/how/why did John's mother die? Is she even dead? I feel like this has been absorbed into my own personal fanon and I don't have any basis or facts of anything to back it up. Anyone? Theories?

Not that I really need to know for... literary purposes. Of course not.

So, really, anything from "hey, he mentions it in episode X, it was so sad!"

We have no idea what happened to his mom, canonically. FANonically, there is every theory under the sun :D

I think Mallozi mentioned in a mailbag reply within the last month that he thinks she died when John was around 12 and was the impetus for some of the family drama. There was something about wanting to throw a line in somewhere but never had time in his scripts....but they've never actually mentioned it in canon.

Not mentioned in canon, but she wasn't at his dad's funeral so she'd either have to be dead or have divorced him on very unfriendly terms.
