I feel like I could have written this exact post. I was interested in Mahone from the get-go, but not really rooting for him since I was still all about Michael and Michael/Sara in season 2. Then he got thrown into Sona with Michael and I was excited to see them work together, because I'd grown to sympathize with Mahone over season 2.
And then the wall scene in "Good Fences" happened and I was a GONER.
I've been quite happy to take whatever meagre crumbs of interaction were tossed out and do some major off-screen extrapolation
YES. And I'm still happy to do that here with them, but I would be really upset if it came out in canon that Michael actively hated Alex. I continuously look for - and am grateful for - every moment where they're still connected onscreen.
I really hope Alex doesn't die; I have a feeling he'll pull a Kellerman - probably dead, but there's no body so you never know. Sigh.

Word. It was like... a religious conversion :-) The last time I got hit that hard was in BtVS, when Spike had his dream about Buffy in S5 -- that kind of 'huh? wha? OMG' moment. Interested fan to hardcore shipper, *ping* :-)
