I vote in major elections, not because I think my one vote matters, but because i know that I am part of a demographic, and therefore if I choose to vote, thousands of others who are statistically similar to me will also. I am aware that this does not make any sense

I'm not sure that any major changes happen quickly enough that you can't become aware with normal exposure to the "outside world."
