Ok, so I belong to the bigfatlosers, and I keep reading all these posts from these newbies who are soooo much taller than me, and weigh less than me, I might add. And they are doing these intro posts, and they lists their current weight, their short term goal weight, and their long term goal weight ( Read more... )

Noooo noo noo nooooooooooooo! It was me, and I'm not sick! Just dumb! And British! We weigh in stone, and although I'm fairly good at noting my weight in pounds, sometimes I get it a bit... wrong. I came up with 118 and thought, yeah, not too bad... thinking 118 was nine stone. 126 is nine stone. Which is what I'm happy at. I was confoooozed! I'm not sick! *Hops about in mock outrage* Sorry to join in... Accidental really, I just made fluffyluggage a friend, only to find this post... Oops...

I'm not sick. Just dumb. Yes? Good? Cheers.

You're in the right and they're very silly. I'm 5'6 and weigh 126 pounds and I don't want to lose any more weight. There is no way in hell that she looked chubby at that weight! I thought that community was for people who wanted to lose a lot of weight? Not for people trying to get unhealthily skinny, when they already don't weigh very much! Yeeeeesh.

That's what I thought?! I'm like, are you kidding me?? Sheesh! I kinda feel sorry for her, tho.

I have to say, I asked her how she came upon that number, and she said she just kinda pulled it outta thin air, and she admitted, maybe 125 would be more appropriate for her, so hopefully...I offered for her to friend me if she likes my profile, so hopefully she will, and I can teach her a thing or 2 about being healthy with weight!

I think maybe when she gets down to less, she'll realize she didn't need to lose that much? I hope so. I worry about some of these people, but boy, it's a TREND I'm seeing, not just one or 2 posts, I worry about these people!

Wow, I didn't realize you'd lost that much! You must've been really sick recently, have you not gotten any better, hun? Oh, don't tell me you haven't?? <3 ya, Jen

You might think about posting the Dove videos. I've posted some really good anorexic fighting stuff:

  • Anti-anorexia video here
  • The most recent Dove video here
  • The classic Dove video here

Hope those help!

It's all about our effed up society. At 16 I was 5'4 and weighed 145 - chubby, but by no means obese. I remember overhearing my best friend's mom saying I couldn't stay for dinner one night because she only had so much food and people my size don't get that way without eating ridiculous amounts of food.

I don't really get the appeal of being super thin. I think girls look better with some meat on their bones. My goal is 135, which is in the upper range of an acceptable BMI for me.

The dinner situation is just crap. What a load of bull! I do not understand that. But I just pissed off my newest friend, so top that one! :(

Man, this is the theme of LJ tonight! My whole friends list is on the same topic. Maybe it's the low-hanging full moon, heh.

One thing to be cautious of (because I've been on both sides of this situation before) is the possibility of disordered behavior here. There are people who think they're "chubby" because they're thin but untoned and have a small but flabby body... and there are people who really have nothing to them but think they do. I can definitely sympathize with feeling like the biggest girl in the weight-loss community. It's sort of an LJ thing-- check off that box on your bingo cards, kids! But be wary of bringing the rant/vent tone from this entry into the conversation in the community, because it won't be well-received!

Good luck :)

No, I wouldn't do that to the community, I just want some good references on how to calculate what is a good weight for people, so that people can figure it out without underestimating. I'd rather they overestimate and then determine they still need to lose a little. IDK, maybe I just need to step out of it, it just may be the wrong community for me. I just put my foot in my mouth and pissed off my newest friend.

Some of these communities are tough, and it's easy to piss people off in one-sided interest groups. Weight and body image are such touchy topics for people.

It's so hard to find good measures of healthy body weight. I don't like BMI because I have a build that tends towards being muscular, and I end up hovering dangerously close to the high end of "healthy" at my natural weight (which is, at 5'3", about 135-140 for me). I could never really be 115 or 120 like BMI says I should. It's hard to shake that, though.

I don't particularly care for BMI myself, because I am petite, and a lot of the charts show that I should weigh either too much or too little. The other thing I don't like its that my sister is big boned, and she is several inches taller than me, but by the BMI's she should weigh WAY less than she really needs to... It's crazy. I just think dr's should be helping patients better, and people should find ways to have more realistic goals. I just don't know how to help them figure it out...I don't want people to hurt themselves!
