Long-overdue "getting-to-know-you" post for new (and just sort-of-new) friends

Aug 29, 2009 15:47

Since I've acquired a whole lot of new friends from different fandoms during the past...oh...six months and haven't done a post like this in ages, here's some questions you guys can comment with and answer to tell me a little more about yourself if you're new enough not to have been around the last time I posted questions like this. DO IT. :D

And I know I was around last time, but I just really like answering these things :P Plus, I'm not sure if I did it last time?

I was actually going to say "Or just fill it out again if you feel like it because most of the questions are different" but I forgot. :)

I totally should read The Lost World. I read Jurassic Park a long time ago and really liked it.

And I completely agree about the Trek fandom being cooler than the SW one.

Yeah, I know I did the last one, but I like answering these things as well, and I think you asked different things this time around (either that or I totally forgot). I hope you don't mind. ;)

Angela / Chicago Suburbs / I work at my parent's restaurant for now / I'm 24, and I'm going to grad school for art, entertainment, and media management specializing in performing arts, but I'm thinking of changing my specialization. Yeah, it's a mouthful. If I'm lazy I just tell people I'm going to school for arts administration.
2. What was your first fandom?
Saiiiiiiiilor Mooooooon. I got into it when I was about 12. Got into the internet fandom a year later. That's when we first got the internet. ;)
3. What five music albums would you want to have with you if stranded on a desert island?
Little Voice by Sara Bareilles, Spirit Room by Michelle Branch, Riot! by Paramore, Home by Angela Aki, Waking Hour by Vienna Teng
. What ( ... )

I actually took a long time to get really into HP, too. I liked it but wasn't completely in love with it at first, and I think part of it was it was a kids' thing and I didn't want to be one of those people dressed up in robes at the release parties and stuff, LOL. OotP was the one that made me give in and stop thinking of it that way.

Thanks for the comment! :)

I know I'm ages late to getting into it and there's tons of it to get through but I'd like to check out X-Files sometime because I never watched it. (Except for maybe once when I was pretty young and I think it scared me too much, LOL.) I bet it would totally be my thing and I'd end up sad that I missed out on the fandom and everything, haha.

My hands down fave fic ever is Iolokus by RivkaT and MustangSally, it's X-Files and it taught me that fic could be meta too, that is to use story to make a commentary on the source material. I've been looking for fic like that ever since.
Oh yes, it's great to find fic that actually says something about the canon and maybe makes you see things about it you didn't consider before. I think a lot of my own fic, whether consciously or not, ends up being kind of meta-ish with what I'm trying to accomplish with it, and I just have to hope I don't get too preachy and pretentious about it. LOL.

*Nods* I recently read something on metafandom about how there's people who write fics and mean them to seem as another episode in the series and people who write fics to explore what gets left out. It isn't a clear-cut distinction, of course, but as a reader I love, love, love to explore what gets left out. I love it when fics explore what the show couldn't. I'm looking forward to getting around to your BSG fics,I've heard amazing things about them! (I'm just healing from that devastating finale at the moment).

1. My name is Kira. I'm from Minnesota. I'm a student.
2. My first fandom was Sailor Moon back when I was 16.
3. I'd prefer mixed cds, but if I have to pick albums I'd want The Essential Clash, The Best of Lou Reed and Velvet Underground, a good Billie Holiday comp, Revolver by the Beatles, and Doolittle by the Pixies
4. I'd want to have The Godfather, Guys and Dolls, Help!, Easter Parade, and A Life Less Ordinary
5. I like too many words to choose a favorite.
6. I babble about whatever fandom interests me. Sometimes I write fic. I read a ton of it.
7. Havelock Vetinari
8. No idea - I never really leave fandoms. I just sort of drift in and out of them.
9. Awesome cover of a Joy Division song on youtube.
10. I'd probably be either a Slytherin or a Ravenclaw.
11. I have one dog, one bunny, two cats and one small child.
12. Tea
13. Vampires
14. Fred Astaire. I love Gene Kelly, but Astaire is always my favorite.
15. I like both cats and dogs.
16. Star Trek, hands down.

2. Wow, looks like lots of people's first fandom was Sailor Moon. Wouldn't have guessed.

9. Hehe, that's awesome! I love that song.
