Everything happens for a reason.
It happens because you’re fated to be, because God wants you to be, and you’re destined to be.
Taemin smiled to himself as he wiped the tears on his cheek.
There must be a reason why God took his mother too soon. Because of that, he grew up with no mother and an abandoning father. He never knew what it feels like to have a mother who’s supposed to hold you when there are thunderstorms at rainy nights. He never knew what it feels like to have a mother who’s supposed to tell him it’s alright when he fell and grazed his skin. He never knew what it feels like to have a mother who’s supposed to read a bedtime story and kiss him goodnight.
But it’s alright, because Taemin believes there’s a reason.
God loves his mother so much, that’s why He took her when she gave birth to him. God decided to let his mother retired earlier from life on earth and live happily ever after in heaven.
The pain on his cheek sting and Taemin rubbed it softly.
His father just hit him again tonight. When he was a child, his father would only hit him when he’s making mistakes. Like getting bad grades. Like breaking a glass when he’s washing the dishes. Like waking up late. As time passed by, his father would hit him for no reasons. When he got home from gambling and Taemin was still awake on school night, he’d snap. When he got home drunk and Taemin dragged him inside the house, he’d slap. When he was irritated because his favorite football club got defeated, he’d come to Taemin’s room and hit him.
But it’s alright, because Taemin believes there’s a reason.
Taemin stared at the mirror and his cheek was painfully red.
The reason is himself.
Because everyone, and he means everyone, including the person above, hates him.
***
It was fate.
Taemin thought it was meant to be when he first saw Minho on the train. He didn’t know why his heart was beating so fast at the sight of his senior at school. All he knows that Minho was popular, being captain of the soccer team. Minho was always seen with Key, another senior who Taemin thought must be the prettiest person at school. He thought it was fate that such a perfect person paired up with another perfect person-rich, one handsome and another beautiful, popular, favorited by everyone, and smart.
He thought they were dating.
Until one day, Taemin came home from his grocery shopping and found Key was holding hands with another person, a handsome black haired male, with Minho by his side, laughing together. He was surprised to see the view, and even more surprised when Minho noticed his presence and smiled at him. Taemin felt himself blushing, unsure if Minho was really smiling at him-or to another person behind him? But when Minho walked towards him and asked for his number, he was not imagining things.
The popular Choi Minho just asked for his number.
Taemin’s hands were shaking and he tried to hide it by clutching the bags tightly. Minho frowned and asked him if he got a fever. He shook his head and looked down, unable to face the taller male. It was when Key called and threatened to leave without Minho if he’s not done yet. Minho smiled at him, saying something about seeing him at school, and left.
It must’ve been fate.
He came home happily, he couldn’t stop smiling, and Taemin wondered if God was starting to like him, for giving him a chance to talk with Minho.
When he put the grocery bags in the kitchen, his father showed up. He was yelling, and the next thing Taemin knew, he was beaten up again, getting shouted for being such a cry baby. Men aren’t supposed to cry, he said.
But Taemin knew his father sometimes still crying with the picture of his mother in his room.
And it’s alright, because Taemin believes there’s a reason.
The reason is himself.

Destiny sucks.
Taemin felt his body was sore from all the beaten last night. At least his father didn’t slap him again, his cheek hadn’t fully recovered from the last time. It was hot outside, and their PA teacher wanted everyone to run several laps instead of swimming. Taemin was thankful, he’s not gonna be able to hide the bruises if they went swimming. So after getting changed, he walked to the field willingly, with his friends moaning behind him, complaining why they should run in such heat...until he found out that Minho’s class is also out playing soccer at the same time.
The auburn haired male stared at in awe as Minho kicked the ball and it went smoothly to goalpost.
Was it destiny that made Minho suddenly looked up and stared straight at Taemin’s direction? Was it destiny, that made Minho walked towards him, earning envious stares from his friends? Or was it because his bright colored hair that made him noticeable? Does that have to do with destiny?
Taemin almost died in happiness as Minho greeted him casually. Then he almost died in embarassment as Minho frowned and told him that the short he’s wearing is too short. Taemin realized some of his friends were whispering loudly about how could Minho-hyung talked to someone like him. He looked down, and the whispers were getting louder, but Minho paid no attention. When his teacher blew the whistle as a sign they all have to start running, Taemin dismissed himself and Minho asked if they could go home together later.
There must be a reason why Taemin nodded so quick in miliseconds before blushing, thinking how stupid must that be, but Minho grinned. Taemin started to run, ignoring his sore body. His heart wouldn’t beat slower and his cheeks were hot. He wasn’t even sure there’s a reason to believe anymore. It just seems too good to be true.
Because the reason is Choi Minho.
***
It must be fate that brought them closer.
Minho was such a sweetheart.
He would wait for Taemin to show up at the train station. Minho would hold his hand gently if there were too many people on the train, keeping him close. He would take Taemin to his class and offered to bring his books. Everyone stares. Some of them were clicking their tongues in amazement, but some of them were bad mouthing the first year.
Minho introduced Key to Taemin and the diva shrieked happily. He glomped at him and Taemin winced at the touch, because Key accidentally touched his bruises. When they were on the way home, Minho touched at the same spot, only firmer than Key, and Taemin yelped. He made up reasons, but Minho didn’t seem to buy them easily. If they weren’t on the train, who knows if the taller male might force him to tell him what’s going on. They were silent for the rest of the journey, and the topic hasn’t been discussed again ever since.
So it must be another fate when one Sunday, they were over at Key’s house, waiting for him to get ready. The house was empty, and Key went to his bedroom to get changed. Taemin was standing in front of the bookshelves, absorbed in all the difficult titles about medical studies. Key’s father was a doctor, so he probably going to be one too. He didn’t know when Minho got beside him and spelling some of the medical names for him. Taemin stared at him fondly, and when Minho stared at him back, he unconsciously snaked an arm around Taemin’s waist to pull him closer-
--and Taemin winced in pain.
Fate must be cruel this time, because Minho ignored Taemin’s pleading and grabbed the end of his shirt tightly, asking permission to pull it up. Taemin did his best to prevent it, but being a skinny person with less strength than Minho made him failed, and Minho succesfully rolled the shirt up, revealing bruises on his milky skin.
Minho’s eyes widened at the purple colored marks, stuttering who did it, and why he didn’t tell him in the first time, and Taemin could only closed his eyes, refusing to answer. He felt anger in Minho’s tone, and Taemin was scared. When Key emerged, Minho was distracted and he used it as an opportunity to release himself from the grip. Taemin ran away, ignoring his names being called, ignoring the vibrating calls on his phone and went home.
Taemin couldn’t cry anymore as he got into his room, instead he feels anger. He cursed destiny, he cursed fate, for making Minho knows his pathetic condition.
He feels worthless, all his beliefs about everything happens for a reason crumbled.
Why did it happen to him?
Why does God hate him so much?
His father entered the room and Taemin was shocked. He was slapped and quickly apologized.
I’m so sorry, Appa. I’m sorry. Please...please don’t hurt me.
He was hit at the same spot again and again, making him crying in pain.
Why was I even born in the first place?
When his father was done releasing his anger, he stomped outside the room and slammed the door.
Taemin was left crying on the floor, clutching his stomach in pain. He wished his mother was still alive. He wished he hadn’t been born so she wouldn’t have to lose her life. He wished...he wished he could believe that there’s a reason for him to be alive.
Taemin fell asleep on the floor and woke up several hours later. He sat up and moaned softly at the painful injuries his father had caused him. He crawled to his bed and found his phone. Messages and missed calls from Minho were dominating. Minho was saying sorry. He wanted to meet Taemin. He wanted to help him. He cared about him. He couldn’t sleep and won’t sleep if Taemin isn’t replying any of his texts. He couldn’t come to his house because Minho didn’t know his house. He wouldn’t be like that if Taemin was willing to show his house in the first place.
And he feels like crying reading some of the last texts.
Minho wanted Taemin to be happy. He wanted him to tell him everything. He wanted him to lean on Minho. He wanted Taemin to depend on him.
Please, Taemin, just let me see you.
The younger male replied the text before changing into looser jeans, because his stomach hurts and a clean shirt. He grabbed a jacket and slipped as quietly as he can outside, heading to the said place. Taemin waited for a few minutes in front of the 24 hours convenience store before a car pulled over hurriedly and a very worried Minho ran to him.
Minho pulled him into a tight embrace and even though it was painful to his body, but Taemin managed not to cry. It was not a good time to talk, so Minho dragged him to the car. Minho drove in silence and he was unsure where to take Taemin. He’s not sure if Taemin has any close friends since he’s been robbing his time lately, and he’s not sure if Key’s dependable right now...so Minho took him back to his house.
The house was quiet, and Minho led him to his room, not even once letting go of Taemin’s hand.
Minho’s house was big and his room was twice Taemin’s room. Noticing that Taemin was still trembling, Minho decided to just let him sleep. He took a pair of pajamas from the drawer and handed it to Taemin. The latter took it with trembling hands, and Minho laced their fingers together, so that they would stop trembling. Taemin’s body was shaking and Minho hugged him gently.
When Taemin feels Minho’s warmth was on him, he couldn’t take it anymore.
He burst out crying.
He cried, cried, and he cried...and Minho just let him, hugging and stroking his hair soothingly. Taemin started to mumbling things between his sniffing, like how he believes everything happens for a reason, that it’s fate, that it’s meant to be. But what is the reason? His mother died of giving birth to him, for what? So that his father would beat him to death? So she exchanged her lives with his, but his father can’t love him normally as a son? Is it fate? He’s just gonna get hit everyday without any reason because it’s meant to be?
Minho let Taemin cried his heart out and waited patiently until he’s done, wiping the tears away with his thumbs. He gave him a glass of water and Taemin downed it thankfully, feeling tired and thirsty from all the crying. They were sitting on the bed, facing each other, and now it was Minho’s turn to talk.
Minho told Taemin that he also believes everything happens for a reason. That it’s fate. That it’s meant to be.
Lee Taemin was born for Choi Minho in the first place.
His mother died giving birth to him because it’s gonnabe Minho who’s gonna take care of him.
His father can’t love him normally as a son because it’s gonnabe Minho who’s gonna love him.
Taemin was hit, because Minho was meant to be the person who’s gonna heal the pain.
God let him cried first in pain, because Minho’s gonna make him smile all his life in happiness.
Because Minho was the reason.
Because they’re fated. They’re destined. They’re meant to be.
I love you.
Minho whispered those words so softly, so lovingly, yet so strongly determined as he leaned forward to catch Taemin’s lips. Taemin closed his eyes as their lips met, and being kissed for the first time, an overwhelming sensation crept, and he shuddered at the feeling, limping backwards. Minho broke the kiss and held Taemin’s body with both of his hands, supporting him.
Taemin was so shy at the lip contact, but he loved every single bit of it.
So he just closed his eyes again, as if to give Minho permission, and the latter didn’t hesitate at all. It must be obvious that it was his first kiss because Minho was being so gentle, his kiss was addicting for Taemin, the way their lips touched. Few moments later, Taemin shyly kissed back and leaned forward, placing a hand on Minho’s chest. The kiss continued until Taemin felt it was beginning to make him drunk, and he slowly pulled apart, separating their lips. There was a bit of losing feeling as they stopped, but for now it was enough.
Minho smiled and pushed Taemin softly to the bed, caressing his cheek.
Now sleep.
Taemin intertwined their fingers tightly.
I’ll be here to protect you from any harm.
He feels so loved by the way Minho touched him, kissing him, caressing him. He feels safe and secure.
I love you.
Was it fate, that made love comes at the right time?
***
Several months later, Minho graduated from the school. Ever since that night, Lee Taemin is officially Choi Minho’s boyfriend.
Taemin finally let Minho came to his house. He let Minho met his father. It was hard at first, but at the second visit, third, forth, and so on, his father was beginning to talk to Minho. He got a better job and stopped hitting Taemin. For the first time, they were able to talk like a decent father and son. They cooked dinner together, and for the first time, his father was finally able to talk to him about his mother.
Minho got accepted into a famous university, and he’s going to leave soon.
It must be the reason why he wanted to come to his house, to say goodbye. To bid farewell to his father.
Taemin was thinking of getting a part time job. He wanted to earn some money, to be able to save some. That way, when he’s free on weekends, he can go and see Minho, without having trouble financially. It may be hard at first, but he’s willing to do it, and he was happy.
Because everything happens for a reason.
And probably that’s why Minho was sitting in the couch in his house, with a serious face, talking with his father about his plan of taking Taemin with him.
Taemin almost couldn’t believe his ears as his father replied confusedly that he’s still in high school. He nodded vigorously, agreeing at the fact.
I’m planning of taking him with me there, Sir Lee.
But...that’s absurd. Taemin still has school and it’s only his second year.
That’s why I’ll take him there if you let me...marry him.
His father stared at the young male in disbelief, but Minho showed no fear and in fact, he was confident. His eyes were solemn, and he was determined. After a few moment of thinking, Taemin’s father sighed and turned to his son. He smiled encouragingly. They’re still young, especially Taemin, but something about Minho made him feels like he could trust his son to the man.
What do you think, Taemin?
Taemin covered his mouth and his eyes widened. His father was giving him the chance. Minho stared at him, full of hope. Taemin’s eyes were teary, he didn’t even need to answer, Minho knows the answer already.
I love you, Hyung.
Suddenly, Taemin loves the fate and the destiny.
He knows everything happens for a reason, and now he knows what the reason is.
Because the reason is Choi Minho.
End.
