Summary: Jonghyun's never believed in love, until...he fell in love with his friend's fiance.
[1] Minho shifted in his chair awkwardly. He glanced at the person in front of him who’s been silently reading the morning newspaper. The same person who's been shocking everyone at the restaurant last night. But Jonghyun looked awfully...calm. Heck, he was so calm that it actually scared Minho a lot. He’s been trying to establish a conversation since the morning Jonghyun arrived at the office, but he feared Jonghyun would snap. So he waited.
After their first encounter with Key last night, and with Jonghyun’s sudden confession, no doubt Key ended up running away from them. They were too shocked to do anything, even Taemin didn’t go running after his brother-in-law-to-be. After all, it’s not like you’re supposed to say “Marry me” to a person you just met...
To make it worse, this morning Jonghyun had arrived at the office looking...different. It wasn’t in a negative term, in fact it was positive...too positive that made Minho was sure that Jonghyun’s face was full with the four letter word. That started with L. That ended with E. That would send someone over the moon and back, just to have butterflies in their stomach.
Minho didn’t have enough courage to talk with his best friend, so he’s been ignoring Jonghyun all day...until Taemin called him and told him about the preparation for tonight. He hadn’t seen Key, and if he did, he wouldn’t have the heart to talk about the situation last night. Then Taemin started saying things like engagement is one step closer to marriage, and road to marriage is full of obstacles...especially when, Taemin added, you found yourself not in love with the person you’re about to marry.
“But you love me, right?”, Minho asked in a worried tone. He could feel Taemin smiling to his phone.
“Of course I do, silly. If there’s one person I’d like to marry, it’s you, Choi Minho.”
Minho made a mental note to buy a wedding ring soon.
Funny thing, after their conversation ended, Minho felt like he’s brave enough to challenge anything, even the frigid jock Kim Jonghyun. So there he was, Choi Minho, sitting in front of Jonghyun’s desk, still not uttering a single word. But he knew he just had to start. Minho cleared his throat.
Jonghyun looked up, frowning. “How long have you been here?”
“Pretty long. Um...hi?”
“I get the impression you’re here because Taemin talked you to. I’m fine, Minho.”
Minho was sure he was. For a person who’s been rejected, he looked quite fine. It was not actually a rejection, though. Key was just standing, muted, his eyes widened in shock. Jonghyun held his wrist firmly, demanding for answer right away. Of course Key was frightened. Of course it was absolutely normal when Key turned around and ran away.
But Minho knew Jonghyun. He’s not the type to give up easily. When he wants something, he’ll do everything he could to have it, and he may not stop unless someone shot his head. Maybe this time it’s different. After all, the person he fell in love at the first sight, was someone’s fiance. His boyfriend’s brother’s fiance, to be exact. Maybe Jonghyun will give up and let it go.
Minho once again cleared his throat. “Okay..well, since you’re not coming with us tonight-“
“I’m coming.”
Minho blinked. “Huh?”
“I said I’m coming. To Jinki’s engagement party, right?”
Minho almost fell from his chair.
“Y-you’re sure?”
Jonghyun looked annoyed. “Yes, I’m sure.”
“You’re not gonna try and take Key away? You’re not gonna sneak and blow the whole place out? You’re not gonna kill Jinki?”
“Hyperbole, Minho, hyperbole.”
Minho examined his best friend once again, wondering if he missed a spot. Jonghyun looked composed and extremely being himself. “Well...just promise me you won’t do anything bad to ruin the party, got it?”
“Got it.”

Key made it to the Lee’s residence just before time. His parents had been calling him for several times, afraid he'd never show up and ruin everything. Key was old enough to realize his parent’s situation. Being the obedient kid, he’d do anything just to make them happy.
Does he love Jinki, you ask?
Key had been showed Jinki’s picture before. The guy in the picture looked handsome, well groomed, manly, has a really nice smile, but...Key didn’t, scratch that, doesn’t feel anything towards the man, even now. Even when Jinki called him couple of times and they talked over the phone, Key still didn’t feel the sparks. He thought he should just enjoy what’s decided for him, he might fall for that Jinki person anyway... until last night, a certain person appeared and broke all of his expectation.
Kim Jonghyun.
That spiky hair, that firm grip, but what made Key’s heart melted was those black orbs. Those eyes of his pierced his heart so deep, he was scared. For a moment, even if they just met, Key felt like he believed those magical words that escaped Jonghyun’s mouth. It was spontaneous. It was like he was saying it without thinking.
Marry me.
Key’s heart couldn’t stop pounding.
His heart didn’t even pound that hard when his parents told him that he’s getting married with the eldest of Lee’s heir. Key just sat there, unmoved, with unreadable expressions on his face, nodded. Thinking that maybe his life goes like this. He’s just never the type to fight for what he wants. It was simple, because he didn’t want anything. He just wanted to live without being a burden to anyone. That’s why he would say yes easily.
“Kibum!”
He heard his mother called him by his real name and forced a smile. She hurriedly walked to his son and pulled him into an embrace. “Umma.”
“What took you so long? We’ve been waiting.”
“I’m sorry,” he looked down. “I lost track of time.”
“Are you alright?”
As much as Key wanted to shake his head hard and cry, he remained silent and nodded. His mother quickly dragged him into the living room, earning several relief sighs from the people inside. Key immediately recognized Jinki.
Jinki’s eyes widened and his lips curved into a wide smile as he approach his husband-to-be. “You’re so beautiful...just like in the photo.”
Key smiled and bowed his head, hiding his face. It took only several seconds that even if he found Jinki quite attractive, his heart didn’t approve of him. Key was forced to looked into Jinki’s face as his chin was lifted with a finger.
“You can call me Onew from now on.”

Taemin’s face was like stoned when Minho entered the room with a very handsome Jonghyun by his side. He quickly realized Jonghyun was making such an appearance just by walking into the room, eyes turning for him. Minho would be the same as well if only Taemin didn’t entwine their hands just in time, sending notifications to everyone that the taller one belong to him.
“I thought he wouldn’t come,” Taemin whispered.
“Well, guess again,” Minho replied casually and he kissed Taemin's forehead.
“Hi Hyung,” Taemin greeted Jonghyun with a warm smile. “You look so..nice tonight.”
“I look the same as ever,” Jonghyun replied also with a smile. “But thank you, Taemin-ah.”
Yes, that’s what I meant. You always look so nice. See the gazes from the ladies? If looks could rape, you’re already...
Taemin was about to open his mouth and strike a new conversation but the sound of a spoon tingling on a wine glass made him stop. It was his father, asking for everyone’s attention. Taemin gulped.
Here we go.
“Good evening everyone. I’m so thankful that you’re all willing to come to my son, Jinki’s engagement party.”
Some of the people applauded excitedly.
“It seems like yesterday that he was only a little kid, a crybaby, and now in a blink of an eye, look at what he’s turned into, a fine young man.”
He went on about how Jinki should be thankful to have such a great life, and that they’ve been friends with the Kim family since long time ago, and bla bla bla, and so on and so on, Jonghyun hardly noticed.
His eyes were fixed only at the shining beauty at the center of the room.
Key was sitting on his chair, looking as gracious as ever, with his fingers entwined together. He didn’t look excited, to think that this was his engagement party, instead he looked blank, eyes gazing lazily to the rug, lips pursed in almost a cute way.
You’re so beautiful, Jonghyun inwardly thought.
As if he had said it out loud, Key lifted up his gaze from the carpeted floor and met Jonghyun’s eyes.
For a moment, both of them stopped breathing.
Key stared at Jonghyun and his wall of defense started crumbling down. He suddenly felt weak under the other’s stare. How could he still come, knowing that I am his friend’s fiance? If he thought Jinki was quite attractive, then Jonghyun was definitely sex-appealing. Everything went so fast last night, it was now that he’s able to focus. And the way Jonghyun stared at him was making him vulnerable. He almost couldn’t put his mask on anymore. Please stop staring. Please stop staring. Please stop-
Suddenly Jinki pulled him up into a standing position and Key, dumbstruck, obeyed when his hand was held up, to show the crowd something shining on his ring finger. Apparently his almost father-in-law just announced that they’re officially engaged. Once again, the crowd applauded happily.
Taemin, who has held by Minho in his arms glanced carefully at Jonghyun, who didn’t even seem to flinch. Either he’s a really good actor or torn apart inside, who knows. But when Jinki pulled Key closer and their lips kissed in a brief second, Taemin noticed Jonghyun’s eyes were blazing with jealousy.

“Bathroom,” Key muttered over and over again like a mantra to himself. He wanted to puke. He needed to wash away the thoughts of that other lips that was claiming his. He wished he didn’t see Jonghyun’s expression before the kiss. He wished Jonghyun looked away when Jinki kissed him, but no, as the kiss ended and Key turned back again, Jonghyun’s gaze was still fixed on him. He wished, oh he wished...
He wished he had never met Jonghyun.
Or, he wished he met Jonghyun before he was forced into marrying Jinki.
Key finally found the bathroom, the green door on the right and quickly stepped in. Perfect timing, as he saw the closet, he immediately knelt down and threw up. Jinki’s scent was nice, but it was sickeningly sweet. Key closed his eyes, trying to push the image away and when he was done, he washed his face and mouth. Then he stared at the mirror. He started to questioning himself, like a detective, desperate for an answer to an unsolved murder.
What are you doing?
You were fine...you intended of playing along this role of arranged marriage just like your parents ask you to...as long as they’re happy...
You were okay, and everyone seemed so convinced about it...
So why the sudden change?
What is it that you’re feeling?
Key touched the ring on his hand, eyeing it. He was so distressed that he didn’t even notice someone peeked inside the bathroom. It was when the sound of the door closed he realized Jonghyun was inside. Key gasped at the reflection at the mirror.
“If you want to take it off, take it off.”
Jonghyun gestured the ring that Key’s been touching.
“J-Jong...”
God, when did a person’s name become this beautiful to his ears?
“You were taking forever in here so I decided to take a peek, just in case you faint or something.”
Jonghyun stepped closer.
“Are you okay? You look pale...”
Key froze on his spot, wanting to move, but he couldn’t. When Jonghyun brought his hand to caress Key’s face, he actually almost push it, but no, he let the hand wander on his face. He even closed his eyes, leaning in to the touch. Key bit his lip, holding back his tears.
“Don’t hold back,” Jonghyun whispered.
“Huh?”
“If you wanted to cry, just cry.”
Key snapped his eyes open and stared at Jonghyun. They were inches apart, so close that Key felt something warm crept to his cheeks. And Jonghyun was staring at him with those eyes...those eyes were strong, determined, they pierced into Key’s soul sharply and were able to see the pain Key’s been hiding perfectly. Jonghyun slowly leaned forward to close the gap between them as he pressed his lips against the other’s.
W-wait! I just p-puke...
Key pushed Jonghyun away softly, but it was not strong enough to really push the latter away. The moment Jonghyun’s lips met his, his heart raced, his face fluttered, his knees were weak. Something strange was filling his stomach and he felt really, really weird. Key could feel Jonghyun's hand grabbed his, caressing it, calming him down. He was being very gentle, and something about his scent made Key felt crazy.
When Jonghyun pulled away, Key’s face was blushing furiously, and he stuttered.
“I-I, j-just t-threw up-“
“I’d still kiss you with your bad breath in the morning, it’s not a problem.”
“W-what?”
“I’d still kiss you even when you’re crying so hard and the taste of tears left on your lips.”
Key’s eyes widened. “Jong...”
“And I’d still kiss you even when you say don’t, or stop.”
Jonghyun kissed Key once again.
“Because I love you, from the moment I saw you, and I promised myself I’m gonna marry you.”
And another kiss.
“And I can’t stop kissing you even if you beg me to,” Jonghyun whispered but then he stopped. “Okay, I’ll stop. I’m sure Taemin or Minho’s looking for you right now. Or us.”
Key who’s still feeling butterlies up his stomach, couldn't say anything and he could only nodded dumbly.
Jonghyun caressed Key’s cheek with his thumb affectionately. He smiled once again at the diva, and after looking over his shoulder for the last time, Jonghyun left the bathroom.
Key clutched to his chest so hard, and he was breathless.
He loves me?
