Anyway, it's made me want to poke around and learn more. I know Rose of Versailles is considered one of the (visual?) inspirations for Revolutionary Girl Utena - which, I've heard, was revamped from a concept being considered for a Sailormoon movie at first. And doesn't Takarazuka and Sailormoon cross again in Myu? (Tagaki Nao, if I remember right, involved in both?)
It's like this whole circular catch-22 of Japanese theatre/music/animanga.
Hopefully not stepping on toes here, but I actually know some of this and thought I'd comment.
Rose of Versailles is considered an inspiration for Utena, specifically, Lady Oscar for Utena herself. I would also consider the Rose Bride dress visually inspired by, well that era of French fashion.
I believe the Utena and Sailormoon manga shared some creative team, but I'm not positive.
The Takarazuka/Sera Myu cross is three actresses, of which Takagi Nao is not one. The three are Nishina Yuri (1978-1986, musumeyaku), Kamiya Yuki (1989-1993, musumeyaku), and Tasai Shun(1985-1999, otokoyaku).
Yes, I did just cross-reference the three on the TakaWiki. I'm bored.
Anyway, ahh. That sounds about right, for the visual inspiration.
They shared Ikuhara. Ikuhara directed a lot of the Sailormoon S episodes (ohai Uranus and Neptune) and was the main force behind Utena. If I remember right.
Huh. Could have sworn I heard Nao. Thanks for the info, though. ♥
Haaa, I actually went looking on wikimoon earlier, soo... not gonna mock you.
Can't believe I forgot about Ikuhara. M'lady and I had a huge discussion about his directing style a few months back...
I remember hearing rumour that Nao was ex-Takarazuka, though I can't remember where. Thinking about it now, knowing what I do about the Revue, there's no way should could have been, the ages don't work out right.
