Yeah, I'm afraid that's what the marketers were counting on me to think when they packaged it so beautifully.

Chess for girls! Ouch! Judith Polgar would be gobsmacked by that video!

The little girl in the ad said chess is a boy's game. Objectively this appears to be true. I've organized chess for 7-11 year old schoolkids and after a while most of the girls drop out. I think it's the competitive aspect that keeps the boys hooked; the winning and losing doesn't seem to matter so much to girls, and chess is also a very unsociable game.

Anyway, I hope you find your way to the gym before too long. It's healthier than chess!

The thing is, I think my current combination of running, hiking and yoga is doing pretty good things for me. As much time as it's all taking up, I'd better be getting something out of it. What's it not taking up is my money. As long as the money I'm saving keeps me motivated to drive to the trails, I think I'll stick with my decision. I have no problem running outdoors in cold weather, and it's not as if we have any cold weather to speak of here in DC anyway. And by the time it gets stinkin' hot again next year, I hope I'll be less well-insulated and better able to cope with the heat, and/or just used to sweating like a pig, and/or able to wake up ungodly-early in the morning to get there before the heat kicks in.
