Dink in the Dark by flonnebonne Ender's Game, Dink, Petra, 2570 words, PG, spoilers. Takes place almost immediately after the final battle. ( Read more... )
The thing about Vlad was something I noticed as well, because I actually read Ender's Shadow before Ender's Game. I'm pleasantly surprised when another person brings it up-- makes me feel less anal about the whole thing. Has Card ever talked about it?
Amazing writing as freaking usual. You really filled in that bit of space after the final battle and what happened to the others. Characterizations are spot on, dialogue snappy and... oh, you know how I feel about your writing. If it was a living breathing thing I'd put five rings on it and take it someplace nice for the honeymoon.
Frankly I disliked everything else in the Ender's Game series so this Dink/Petra bit is more than enough for me to consider it headcanon.

I'm so glad someone else noticed the Vlad thing! YAY nothing wrong with me, unless there's something wrong with you too. No idea if Card has ever talked about it, or if the inconsistencies were fixed in later editions.
Ha ha, whenever I write Ender's Game fic I copy Card's writing to some extent, so you actually want to marry a(n imperfect) clone.
You disliked everything else in the Ender's Game series? You mean Speaker for the Dead and onwards?

...We're just freaks. -sob-
Nah, it's still your stuff. You have a certain way with prose IMO. And I'd still marry it even if it was an imperfect, mishappen thing that gurgled for speech.
Yes, I didn't even particularly like Speaker for the Dead. I went up to Shadow of the Giant and everything published thereafter I didn't bother with. Really felt like Ender's Game/Shadow were the high points and everything else was him just dropping the ball all over the place. Did you like everything in the series?

I didn't mind Speaker for the Dead, but I was pretty meh about Xenocide and hated Children of the Mind.
And I actually don't like the Shadow series much, even Ender's Shadow, because it contradicts my interpretation of Ender's Game so much...but I think I've read all of the series except the latest book (Shadows in Flight). Card's writing is engaging enough (i.e. you don't get bored) that I slogged through it. I'll probably read Shadows in Flight too because I'm a completionist la la la.
Have you read War of Gifts? It's a novella, takes place during Ender's time in Battle School. It's pretty good. Doesn't hurt that Dink is one of the main characters.
