I don't think you can find an easy answer to that online. What they're asking you to do is listen to some sentences in different dialects and transcribe them into IPA which is what phonetics itself is about, so I'd just sit down and listen to some sentences with the IPA alphabet and info in front of me ( ... )

I know it's a hard thing to find online, the problem is that my lecturer didn't do any of that with us! He had like two lessons mumbling off on vowels and consonants, making the sounds they match and that is that. How am I supposed to remember what [I] stands for and what [a] stands for? I can't find a single site online that has all these symbols with the appropriate sounds attached to them and this is part of the problem. I have the chart in front of me but when I can't decide what it is I'm hearing it's no use!

lol what a way to teach phonetics, wtf. You guys should complain.

Here's a quick guide to IPA vowels: http://dialectblog.com/the-international-phonetic-alphabet/the-ipa-vowels/ link to consonants in there.

Here's a tutorial:

What about youtube vids like these?

Probably more if you search for IPA etc

*sigh* I know but it's like all the rest (at least the ones I've talked to which is like two or three people) gets it and the rest don't seem to care! I'm seriously bummed here.

I actually used these lessons to learn IPA myself one I realized my lecturer wasn't being much help...

That youtube link though looks awesome, I think I'll just go to youtube and see what I can come up. One last question, do you have any idea what this symbol means: It's like a reversed [j] but without the dot on top. My lecturer says it's mid high mid front.... I couldn't find anything like this in any other IPA vowel chart I've looked at...
