Download Festival!

Ooh, I get to cover the Download Festival at Shoreline Amphitheatre for The Spartan Daily this Saturday! Beck, Muse, the Shins, Coheed & Cambria, and a bunch of bands I've never heard of (I am so out of it -- I thought Sean Hayes was the guy who played Jack on Will & Grace?).

Oh, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Which means I'll probably get to hear "MapsRead more... )

Yay shallow depth-of-field. (I know photography words!)

Yes, yay for shallow DOF! Yay for being able to create pretentiously artsy images that people are impressed by (even though all it takes is opening the aperture)!

And yay for knowing photography words, so it sounds like what we're doing is really complicated!

Really, I hate it when terminology is more obtuse than it needs to be. Depth of field really ought to be called "depth of focus" which is far more intuitive. But damn, I sure do love playing with it!

"Depth of focus" makes so much more sense! Maybe I should try to explain it that way to my classmates, who are still very, very confused about DOF (partially because our instructor isn't terribly great at explaining it).

Yeah, I heard somebody else mistakenly call it that sometime last year and instantly thought it made more sense. Hope that helps, although I still think it's something not easily explained that you mostly get when you play with it. Please tell me your instructor has had you guys shoot a scene with both wide and narrow apertures so you can see the difference for yourselves! Our photojournalism class sucked eggs, but at least he had us do that.

(and do take solace in the fact that you will learn a lot from shooting assignments and getting critiques, even if your instructor is completely incompetent)
