Okay, fair point. But still, I am so sick of Raiden being described as some kind of ineffectual loser, when he's not. He is awesome and personally I would have been totally cool with Kojima exploring his massive amounts of trauma more, not that I'm not writing two extremely long fanfic that do exactly that or anything. And anyway, would it have been so hard to throw some kind of qualifier in there, like "He appears to have no actual combat experience," or "He says he has no actual combat experience." I mean, the game's been out for years, it's not like they need to worry about spoilers.

And is he really that emotional? He spends most of his codec conversations with Rose trying to fend off her attempts at establishing emotional intimacy, other than that one time they reminisce about their first meeting. Personally he's always struck me as pretty emotionally stunted, like he's working off some ideas he has about how normal relationships are supposed to work, but doesn't really have any basis in his own experience. And no, I'm not ( ... )

I keep running into the character limit when I talk to you, Fly. flight_wo_wings November 24 2010, 14:19:22 UTC
Okay, before I get my metapants on I need you to know that this comment made me laugh way too hard. I needed that, thanks. Also I think I want to marry you for mentioning Python, because I watched a walkthrough of Portable Ops last week and oh my god, Python is awesome. With his angst over Big Boss and his history as a pawn of the government and victim of immoral experiments, and his Pinheadesque head. So much love. I don't think it'd be going too far to label him the cyborg ninja of Portable Ops, would you? I mean, he's definitely more of a cyborg than Olga.I definitely agree that there's a ridiculous double standard between the degree of emotional anguish Big Boss is allowed display versus what Raiden's allowed to display, though I'd like to point out that Big Boss' emotions might also be slightly more acceptable because he's also reacting to events happening on a more epic scale. Raiden has to deal with a clingy girlfriend -- Big Boss had to shoot his beloved mentor (who also happened to be a hot cougar) in the head. While I doubt ( ... )

This is why I avoid MGS message boards. If not for the stupid fanboys then for the ignorant fanboys. Sure, Raiden's a total woobie, but he's a badass woobie.

Speaking of Quinton Flynn, I was replaying ME2 the other day (yeah, you're probably sick of hearing me talk about that game) and noticed he voiced quite a few extras. With one character it was obvious because he sounded like Raiden with a frog in his throat, but then he also voiced a random turian bartender and it took me a while to figure out it was him because he wasn't using his Axel or Raiden voice.

MGS has pretty much defined what it means to be a woobie, what with all the characters were used up and discarded by their governments (the Boss, Big Boss, Sokolov, pretty much every Emmerich ever), or used for totally immoral and probably painful scientific experiments (Grey Fox, Raiden, Python, the Boss AGAIN).

It takes true talent to make a six foot tall man who looks like Pinhead and makes terrible cold-related puns the entire time you fight him into a woobie but by god Kojima managed it.

I could never get sick of hearing about ME2. :) And yeah, Quinton Flynn's got some major chops. He was also the voice of Reno in Advent Children I believe, and he sounds totally different from Raiden or Axel. A lot more gay, for one. Cause, you know, Raiden's totally not gay. XD

I still say MGS3 had the biggest woobie cast if only for the combined woobieness of Naked Snake and The Boss, though 2 is close behind.

Think he might've also been a minor character in the Shadow Broker mission, but the ME wiki and imdb don't list the character's VA. Sure sounds like him, though.

Yep, he was Reno alright. And yeah, he was more gay than Raiden. Raiden just had sexual tension with a creepy bisexual vampire and got molested by a big, Russian shockey man in joke material. XD

I don't know, Big Boss spends pretty much all his free time in Portable Ops and Peacewalker moping about the Boss. He's pretty wooby, for a craggy, bara mercenary. XD

He's got a pretty distinctive voice, it's true. :)

I haven't even played the actual game, but Rude/Reno is still my otp. XD Partnerslash for the win.

Though it's more like a creepy bisexual vampire had sexual tension with Raiden. XD I don't remember Jack ever initiated any touching, or saying anything with innuendo to Vamp. Poor guy also got mistaken for a girl and groped by the President too.

I've said it many times, Kojima's just trying to see how much gay he can cram into this series at this point because he's a troll and he knows that no matter how MUCH he trolls the fanboys of the irritating variety they're never going to admit to it.

at this point

Dude, at you kidding? This is the series that brought us deadly poison Zanzibar hamsters and a NASA ninja. Kojima's always been trolling the hell out of us, he just used to be more subtle about it.

The willful blindness of the homophobic fanboys gets really irritating, though.
