Vash thought Hana got Haruhi pregnant, so he was gonna marry them. Then someone, I think Nicolai, hit him with the pistol, knocked Vash out, and someone stuck him in the brig for the safety of the ship.

Vash thought that Haruni was pregnant with Hana's child and Vash tried to do something called a 'shotgun marriage'. Ness, Ryoji, Rikku, Larhal, some lady and this guy who spun his gun around and around were there as well. We found Hana in a closet and Vash wanted to bring him to find Haruni so that they could get married but that guy with the gun did that pistolwhip thing!

...it was bad that Vash got hurt, but the pistolwhip was pretty awesome!
