What can't they understand? It's a pretty straight forward story. Maybe it just doesnt translate culturally...I dont know. I didn't love or hate it, I just hated reading all together in high school.

Yeah, I think the people who hate reading are the ones not liking it. But even my friend who loves reading and wants to be a writer doesn't like it.
