Ahem. We've finished the leylandii in the front garden! Really quite pleased, now just need to see if I can rope Mike into taking out the last few in the back garden: when I mentioned it, he said "We'll do those next year", and that's only a few weeks, right ( Read more... )

What about an apple tree? You can get dwarf-ish apple trees, try M9 or M26 root stock, or M27 root stock if you want very short (shorter than you).

I was going to suggest a fruit tree too, but how about a dwarf cherry or maybe a dwarf crab-apple, both have nice blossom

There are already both a flowering cherry and a crab apple in that corner of the garden.

I'd suggest a rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) - wonderfully hardy, don't go mad, pretty sprays of white flowers in the spring, lovely autumn colour and berries that feed the birds for a good portion of the winter. Other than that, maybe a decorative crab apple.
