Safe.

My Sansa came with a trial account at Rhapsody, but that is owned by Real Networks.
Yahoo Launchcast?

It used to be this amazing user driven site where you could find some different and incredible music. Then they either went under or sold the site (I never knew which).

To me, it more resembles a store at the mall now.

Ok, it is not so much the chance of getting sued by the RIAA but I have seen too many get *extras* with *free* music.
So lets us simply say I'm looking for a *safe* source.
Does this Russian source qualify?

Actually yes.

Bear in mind that their selections will mostly be obscure, limited and are all password-protected (always the same password though, and it's listed on the download page).

Other suggestions I can offer are still along the peer-to-peer and BitTorrent angles, and they fall squarely within the boundaries of places you said you don't want to go. :P
