Squeak. Squeak. Squuueeeak.

Outside the General’s tent, Private Stanley of the 27th Young Inniskillings’ ears reddened. He did not mind standing sentry, but this was why he dreaded being assigned the duty in the evenings. How his mate of the other side of the door seemed able to ignore it he had no idea!

It was at this moment Major Hogan of the Engineers sauntered up to the tent, a smile on his good-humoured face as he addressed Stanley.

“Good evening, my lad! I know that you’ll be telling me it’s late, but I was wondering whether I could see the Peer?”

“’M sorry, sir,” Though he tried, Stanley could not keep the nervous stutter from his voice. “He’s got… he’s seeing Captain Sharpe, sir.”

Hogan’s smile faded as he gave the young private a cautious look.

“Doing it again, are they?”

Stanley swallowed and nodded awkwardly. Hogan sighed.

“Never mind, lad,” he said, giving him a sympathetic pat on the shoulder. “They’ll be finished before long.”

Maybe, Stanley thought as Hogan walked away. The un-oiled bedsprings were still creaking, and he heard a muffled moan quickly shushed by another. Silently, he only prayed that after they had finished they would not decide to go for a second round…
