Owning your views

Here's another thing that's bugging me. As a Christian, it upsets me so much to be labelled 'the enemy' in so many debates over liberal values (gay marriage, abortion, etc ad infinitum). There's a large cultural element to a lot of the Christian anti-[insert practice here] groups, as the practice of Muslim women wearing burqas is cultural. It says clearly in the Qur'an that women should use their headscarves to cover their breasts so as not to incite lewd imaginings or similar, which is interpreted not as a reference to some specific cases at the time but as a divine command to continue the pre-existing tradition in [adjective deleted in an effort not to be anachronistically condemning - but, seriously, research the period] Arab society of women covering their whole bodies so as not to really appear in public. Similarly, for better or worse it does say in black and white, several times, in the Bible that homosexuality is morally wrong. The Bible is so full of contradictions that we all have to pick and choose the bits we want to support, and for some reason humans appear to be hardwired to pick up on things that can be used to alienate a group of people, so despite all the other random biblical instructions their ( ... )
