so tonight that I might see #1
When Lewis came back from his training exchange with a unit up north, Greg felt like celebrating. His team did, too, apparently, because when Ed arrived in the briefing room, he set a white box down on the table. Jules leaned in and sniffed.
"Donuts?" Spike asked from the other side. Jules nodded.
Wordy reached out to flip the lid open, when Ed smacked his hand away with a disapproving 'uh-uh'. The team had arrived early, to get a little debriefing done before Lewis was due. They hadn't gotten around to talk about the exchange the night before, too exhausted to deal with it.
"So," Jules began when everybody was sitting. She was looking at Greg, obviously waiting for him to open the round.
Before Greg could say anything, Ed blurted out, "Can we not exchange Lou again?"
A chorus of 'yeah's followed that, and Spike drummed on the table with his fist in agreement.
"I know this week's been hard," Greg started, ignoring the team's protests that that was too mildly expressed. "But it's good we did this exchange."
When Greg had done the annual performance reviews, he had discovered that he hadn't been giving Lewis enough chances to prove himself. Lewis was a typical allrounder, whom Greg could trust with every task - but he worried that he had never tested Lewis enough to see if he excelled at anything.
A training exchange was a good way to find out what was missing in a team. And it was a chance for the exchange officer to see what their skills were worth in an unfamiliar team. Two weeks ago, this had sounded like a great idea.
But the wiry exchange officer's zeal to prove herself to the men, and the lack of Lewis' calm presence had almost torn them apart.
Spike had been angry right from the beginning, Jules had felt her territory intruded, and Ed was unhappy with the exchange officer's temper. Training only went well on the first day, until the boys decided it was time to voice their complaints. And from that point on, no one had held back anymore.
"I didn't know we needed him that much," Wordy threw in quietly, echoing everyone's thoughts. "Is that why you did it?"
Greg smirked. "Partly, yeah." He looked at his files and thought that maybe they should know. "I feel like I haven't been given Lewis enough chances. I wanted to see what he'd get to do on another team."
"You want him off the team?" Spike asked, eyebrows raised. The team looked at Greg for reassurance. Even Sam seemed startled by that suggestion.
"After this week? No way." Greg shook his head. "Like I said, I think we needed to see this. Almost everyone of you has gone on one of those exchanges already."
Everyone looked at Wordy, who held his hands up.
"Not any time soon," Greg calmed them. "Let's use this experience, though, alright?"
He looked around and got nods and 'yeah's in return.
