Hey all, I went to the Toronto Comicon this weekend, and got me some treasures. Several sketches, and this.

Those are all very, very awesome. I especially like Manapul's Captain Cold. Then again, I'm a bit of a Manapul fangirl! :D

Thank you! I was sooooo lucky to get something from Manapul, as he's well out of my price range, and everything he did for people turned out beautifully. People kept coming over as he was painting and calling to their friends "Hey, look at that Captain Cold!" :)

:D I bet it was really great. The Motor City ComiCon was in May, but I didn't have the money to make it. Which was a shame because Adam West was going to be there. Maybe next year, though!

The last one I went to was... six years ago. I met Tony Amendola and bought a lot of Stargate memorabilia, and wasn't even a comic fan! So I really want to go to one. :)

Adam West is going to be at Toronto show in August -- but that show is really expensive.

If you're ever able to hit a Toronto con but are on a budget, this one is the one to go to. The August one is bigger and has far more guests (and more varied guests) though.

I hope you can get to a show soon, they're a lot of fun :)

This makes me wish soooo bad I lived across the Pond. You wouldn't see a comic book author in Bordeaux, France, not for a thousand years :S Thing is, if I did live there, I probably wouldn't be able (for job/schedule/financial reasons) to go to these cons, so I figure I'll just drool at the beautiful art and stop over-thinking things :o)

I love Manapul's work. What did he use? Watercolours and white marker? And the paper has such great texture, it's just awesome - and the watercolours seem to have layers :o) All the other drawings are great (Lisa and Briana Chan's Top I prefer, very distinctive styles there) but that last one... Oh, what the hell, I'll just give in to the squee, then :P

There are a few big cons across the Channel in the UK -- one in Spain too (can't remember if it's in Barcelona or Madrid...the former, I think). So maybe you'll get to one someday :)

He used watercolour and an odd white marker that looked like whiteout -- I'd never seen such a thing before (but am not an artist, natch). And the unusual paper texture is because he painted on the board packed with the Flash issue I got him to sign :)

Honestly, not only is the Manapul sketch the best (though I love them all), he did it for free. I can't get over that at all, I am soooo lucky. He was just being super-nice to everyone. And I got to listen to his stories while standing in line.

The only "international" artist who's stopped in Bordeaux for a sign-in is, to my knowledge, Alan Lee. I stood in line for 40 minutes to get his autograph, and he was so sweet - very kind and soft-spoken, just like in the Lord of the Rings DVD extras. He didn't draw anything, but we chatted a bit (man, I was so glad I could speak English!) and he signed my copy of The Children of Hurin and I hopped out trying to hold in my fangirl squeeage :o]

"Listen to his stories"? Ooh, what kind of stories? That must have been so interesting - wish I'd been there :o) What's the average price for an artist's drawing, then? And I suppose you pay on entrance, too? I've only ever heard of comic cons, so I'm interested in any info.

Wasn't familiar with Alan Lee, but a quick Googling shows he does really nice art. That's cool, it must have been interesting ( ... )

Ah man, I love all of these. Have I mentioned it's pretty much my dream to buy some Manapul art? It so is. There are very few comic conventions in Texas though, and I doubt he's been to one here. (In fact I rarely get to go conventions here.)

Thanks! Yeah, I don't know how much he travels to other cons -- he said he's going to San Diego. He goes to some/most of the Toronto cons because he's a local.

You should be able to buy some of his art online; this link might be up to date, although it doesn't have any of the Flash pages I saw this weekend:

Maybe the Flash pages will be up eventually. You might be able to contact him or his rep directly via his site/blog, but I've never tried it. He's also on Twitter and DeviantArt.

Those are all great. I love the smirk on Trickster's face in the second one and the colors and form on the Golden Glider one are gorgeous. But that Cold one is definitely the best. I love the contrast between the brown background and the white and black of Len's costume and face. His eyes look so expressive and determined. Beautiful.

I may be going to my first convention ever in Boston in October. I hope I can get some great artwork like this there if I make it.

Thank you!

Good luck if you do, I hope you have fun! Cons can be crazy (especially if it's a big one), but they can be a lot of fun too :) I'd recommend taking print-outs or comics with you as reference art for the artists if you plan to get sketches...if you want them to draw Batman it wouldn't be a problem, but half the artists I get to draw the Rogues don't know who they are and need reference :) So it depends on how well-known the characters are.
