Weeeell. I applied, and while I don't exactly regret applying, exactly, I do regret the time and effort I put into the interview for some people (tutors) to act like stereotypical asshats and make me feel stupid. This was apparently not a common experience, so I guess you'd have to pick your college...
Also, what are you applying for? If Cambridge is genuinely good for the subject, go for it. But if you don't like the system (like, I really wasn't interested in the tripos system or whatever it's called and having to study Political History of England 878-1090) or the actual teaching or they're not actually massively good for your subject, I wouldn't bother.
Having said that... Cambridge is really pretty. And you seem more confident than me so I guess if the porters laughed at you - "hahaha! You don't go in through the FRONT DOOR!" - you wouldn't feel quite as stupid and would possibly give them a withering look of doom and then blog about it.
Ohh! Thanks so much, I didn't expect to find anyone who had actually applied to Cambridge! I'm trying to narrow down the list of college's I'm interested at the moment. Which college did you apply to? (Because obviously that one's getting striked from my list!)
In terms of the actual subject I'm studying, I want to do law, which Cambridge has a great reputation for, but I'll be entering in 2006, which is when the new £3,000 fees come into action. So, given that 3rd level education is (practically) free here, I'm not sure if I want to go to Cambridge badly enough to pay an extra £9,000 + accomodation and food.
It was History at Sidney Sussex, but I had a friend who applied for Engineering there too and he had a fantastic interview. I guess the key is confidence. I really wasn't, and he really was!
I was talked into applying WAY too late (like three weeks before it was due) so I didn't put much time into it and didn't even go on an open day or visit before the interview, so I think that you're doing those things is positive! I'd see if you liked it on open days before anything...
Sister's friends: one did general admission and got the all girl's college, and she got a place grades depending. She liked it. And the other applied to Churchill and didn't get in but she thought it was really nice. I think the open days are really good!
I know some people who are still shattered three or four years later because they didn't get into Cambridge. So as long as you don't go that route, wherever you go will be fine!
I will tell you more later if you want, ask as many questions as you feel like, but now my alloted time at the computer is over :p
Did anything in particular make you choose Sidney Sussex to apply to? (Although I've been nosing around on various forums and it seems Scarf Colours had a lot to do with many people's choices)
