advice?

Yes, I still occasionally remember I have this blog. For instance, when I am facing a wrenching decision and feel the need for some outside inputs. Oh don't worry, I'm physically and mentally OK, but I need to navigate between Scylla and Charybdis on my way to an international holiday ( Read more... )

Man, choices are tough! You have my sympathy. How early does your friend's break start? Would it be possible to squeeze in your holiday together right before Christmas?

Depending on where you relocate to, it might be possible to attend a future Hogmanay even if you're not based in Philly at that point.

The flip side of having to make a choice between two things you really want to do is that either way you get to do one of them. Either you get a great holiday to Italy or Spain with your friend or you get to attend Hogmanay and maybe still see your friend in Wales. While the total win of doing both may not be possible, either way you get to do something really cool and most likely have an awesome time.

You may have figured this out from facebook, but I thought I'd let you know that I did decide to travel! I'm flying to the UK and spending a couple days in Cardiff, then flying to Rome with A and spending a few days there, as well as possibly in another small town in the area. I think it will be awesome, with good company and lots of wine...

I'm sad to miss Hogmanay, but yes I do hope to attend many more, either because I live in Philly or because I'm one of the dancers visiting Philly for the event!

Thanks for the thoughts...

Oof. Speaking as someone who hasn't missed Hogmanay for nine years running, I would probably go to Hogmanay, but even so it would be tough. I take it he's not free the week around Christmas? If he is, then you could go for that and come back on the 30th or something. (I am also speaking as someone who doesn't pay much attention to Christmas except to remember why all the shops are closed.)

I have to say, New Year's in Amsterdam is totally awesome. You guys could meet up here! Unfortunately, we're going to be missing it this year (because I'm going home for Christmas for the first time in four years!!!), otherwise I'd invite you guys to come stay at our place. :)

Is there any chance there's some Hogmanay-like ball actually happening in Scotland that you could do? You wouldn't see all your friends, but it would be pretty neat, I bet.

Do you know anything about New Year's in Orvieto? I'll be in Rome for a couple days, but it's expensive over New Year's and I want to visit another small town anyway. Orvieto, or maybe Siena for a larger city.

Anyway, I hope you have a lovely time at home for Christmas!

And thanks for the thoughts. It's less the dancing, so I probably wouldn't seek out a Hogmanay ball IN Scotland, and more the friends visiting from out of town. Next year...
