I met my friend Ali over the summer, when she started interviewing farmers at the South & Passyunk market. She's one of the local-foodies I've most enjoyed meeting, but sadly she's moving away from Philadelphia by the end of December. So, I suggested that we have one more culinary expedition before she left town ( Read more... )

i'm so glad you tried shrimp with the head on and liked it! so many people who aren't used to the concept are freaked by it. in high school, we were in china on a concert tour, and during one meal we were served whole fish. they were fresh and prepared very well, but no one at my table would touch it because they were whole, and therefore still had heads and eyes. and i think i know the kind of snails you're talking about--not escargot snails. for those, i have to use a toothpick to get them out.

I liked it better! I would describe myself as a moderately-adventurous eater (although by suburban NJ standards, perhaps an extremely-adventurous eater, heh), but for some reason fish heads/eyes have never particularly bothered me. I ate whole small sardines in Spain...

Yeah, I had to resort to a toothpick to get the snails out. Then I had to resort to swiping up the black bean sauce with the snail-meat-on-a-toothpick! Sucking up both would've been easier and cooler.
