That's what it said on my breakfast! ;) I was eating skyr.is, which I now discover is not yoghurt but yoghurt-like cow's milk cheese. I totally did not enjoy it as much as my beloved Pequea Valley yoghurt...

As it turns out, Pequea Valley yoghurt was the product that John E. was sampling at the Fair Food stand at the (20th & Callowhill) Whole ( Read more... )

I'm basically with you on this, though I tend to end up focusing more on organic than local; it tends to be difficult to identify what is local in this area, as even my nearby market tends be no more than about half locally produced.

Organic often tastes better, but more importantly, news items like this one tend to reinforce the idea that it's a good way to go. It's hard to know what your food has gone through, and we don't really know just what the long term effects of modern methods on our health will be.

::nods:: There are a couple details I didn't mention in the post that might help explain my preference for 'local' over 'organic'. For one thing, thankfully, the farmer-ish markets that I frequent (in Clark Park and Reading Terminal) are producer markets, so that's clear. There is a small hole-in-the-wall produce store that I just like shopping at, where they get some local stuff and some from wherever, so when I shop there I'm not overly picky.

Also, a lot of the local farms aren't certified organic, but are low-spray or chemical-free or whatever. e.g., it'd be impossible to grow fruit around Philadelphia without some judicious use of chemicals, and the farmers I've heard from or about try to use a variety of pest-management strategies to minimize chemicals as much as possible. So, if I'm shopping at the Farmstand, I'm not going to obsess about 'certified organic' over 'chemical free'...as some people actually do.

I would highly recommend you try Miel Patisserie on 17th between Walnut and Locust. I love their hazelnut and chocolate dessert called the Piedmont.

Skyr is cheese! I had no idea. Well, I continue to love it, perhaps because I didn't have the preexisting yogurt loyalty you have.
I also have a dirty romance with Kettle Chips' newer flavors.
Living by Reading Terminal has, by convenience, placed me solidly in the local food supporters' box. I just love skimming over Ok Lee's seasonal selection when I get home from school and buying at week's worth of produce for a few dollars.

P.S. My creatures can't contain themselves when skyr is around, but your kitty was totally uninterested in the skyr snack I brought with me last week. She's a yogurt snob too?

Sam is always obnoxiously eager to poke her nose into whatever I'm eating or drinking, but I think she's a picky kitty at heart. :)

I love seasonal produce...
