As you might have heard, I've started playing WoW. I'm only doing the trial now*, and have determined that it isn't so compelling that I have to delete it from my hard drive immediately or it'll suck up all my free time. However, everyone I talk to about it (other than current players) tells me I should stop now or I'll never get out ( Read more... )

the people I know who spend the most time playing it are the ones who don't make a lot of money and would feel like it was a waste of cash if they weren't playing it as much as possible. or, at least, that was the case when they got hooked.

It is possible to golf without being a golfer.

However, be aware that game designs which simulate "achievement" can really start to condition you. May I suggest Bang! Howdy?

Thanks -- this response has really made me think about the whole thing. I'm now not so gung-ho.

The current plan is to play out the free trial, not play next week (gonna be busy anyway), then see what I think about subscribing.

...And now I suspect I'm overthinking this silly thing.

Not as insidiously as levelling-based games with long-term play. And promises that things really get fun once you invest a certain amount, and are up until then only sporadically fun - Skinner's work on operant conditioning tells us that.
