Up to now, Ada has ignored the kitten's food. I had hoped it was some sort of parental instinct. Turns out she just hadn't wanted any until now. Anyone have any tips for keeping the big cat away from the kitten's food?

feed the kitten while the big cat's locked in the bathroom enjoying the shower curtain?

That might work. Sucks to have to manage the cats so much, though.

That's probably what I would suggest. The only other option I can think of is to have designated dishes for each cat, spray water on Ada every time she eats out of the wrong dish and then guide her to her own food.

Zeppo was very much into people food, and had absolutely no table manners. As in, he would jump up on the table (or on my lap if I was eating on the couch) and immediately start eating right off my dish. Sometimes I liked to fuck with him by giving him a piece of his own, if I was eating something cats didn't like (say watermelon). Didn't work -- he'd just return to stealing mine. It was gross AND irritating, but it's not like I can hold a fork and a squirtgun in my hand at the same time, so I just started putting him outside before I ate anything.

Yeah, I think the only thing that's going to work is to put the kitten's food bowl down several times a day and lock Ada away from it.

Also, Abigail is totally interested in people food. Only thing she's got so far is a tortilla chip. Annoying. She can't get up on the table without using our laps as a halfway point, though, so maybe she'll grow out of it before her jumping skillz develop fully.

Assholes!

Eat the big cat, and regurgitate her when the kitten is grown up and they can both eat the same food.

Kittens eat more than cats. Just put out more kitten food than Ada can eat.

but kittens sometimes get a more nutritious diet, can't have the big cat balloonning up

Does not compute. Ada would eat herself sick, throw up, then eat more. In fact, when we were living with the other cat back in Eugene, she did that once.
