The Delicious tour was pretty incredible. I've been back in town for a little over a week now. We ended up coming back to Bloomington twice after the engines of two vehicles failed on us within 48 hours, and the second time we had to come back in town, we started leasing a van. An awesome van. The Cold War was a nuclear punch and judy show. Friedman's just using a cheap rhetorical trick to position the "other side" as the necessary result of people not doing what he says. There's a term in logic for that that Rachel probably knows.

Libertarianism is based on the false dichotomy of state/economy. The state is not a meddling outsider who prevents the market from reaching equilibrium; a fused state/economy apparatus is the equilibrium our market moved toward. And not to drop a couple of profanes, but equilibrium in this country is really only good for nationalists and plutocrats.

I think there are plenty of cultures that have existed outside the suffocating vice that is capitalism ... who successfully live without the kind of monetary-based greed that Friedman was talking about.I think you're right. I agree that humans are driven to a great degree by self-interest, but Friedman's unspoken assumption is that acting in your own self-interest is acting against somebody else's.
