Be very picky in what you feed your pets, and keep in mind that the most expensive food is not necessarily the best. If it's made by a candy company (as many popular brands are), odds are it isn't high-quality food. Look at ingredients (on the back of the bag, not the front) - if it's something you think a dog or cat shouldn't be eating (ash, onion, corn, wheat meal), steer clear and find an alternative.

We switched from Nutro when one of our dogs got deathly ill from a bag of it. It turns out that COSTCO sells a brand (Nature's Domain) that costs 2/3 as much as we were paying, had about half again as many digestible calories (meaning we used 2/3 as much food per meal), no wheat, and no corn filler (ergo, no allergy problems).
