digital video editing and cognitive dissonance

A month before Christmas, when I decided on Teh Sekrit Projekt of making an anime music video for Ghost for Christmas, I basically knew the barest essentials of how that worked and assumed that it would take a few weeks to learn how and make the first one (which would suck, as first attempts do) and that it would take me less time to do each

It IS crazy challenging and insane at first if you're working in good programs, but I wonder if you have tried doing something in plain old Windows Movie Maker? It's, like, Vidding For Dummies. You can't do a lot of fancy schmancy stuff...basically you can arrange clips in order and do, maybe, three different effects...but it might restore your confidence to do something really simple?

I was using WMM at first, and it kept freezing up and crashing because I was trying to get it to edit a video in an approved format, but in an incompatible codec. Hence reading the manual.
