A little perspective.

You know, a lot of the time I feel like I don't contribute enough to fandom. I can't make gifs or art, I don't chat on tumblr (though my ask is always open, and questions are always welcome here, too! :) ), I don't engage in spoiler-frenzy or speculation, and I always, always, always feel like I don't write enough ( Read more... )

i heart fandom (sometimes with irony), writing thoughts

To the disapproving voices in the back of Muse's head:
Seriously? you cannot be serious. Of What in the world can you POSSIBLY disapprove? Muse's writing is not only voluminous, it is gorgeous, intelligent, engaging, moving, and entertaining.

Muse, you could write more, of course, if you wanted to give up the rest of your life, because heaven knows there would be many of us who would be willing to invest the time to read it.
You need to keep that blown-away feeling parked somewhere near the front of your consciousness. (why do I hear a voice in my head talking about unreliable narration?)

gratefully, - a HUGE fan.

*shakes head at you*

No, no. Your perceptions are not quite right, here. :)

Well, I never said what I felt was accurate, only that it's my internal monologue. :)

Isn't it funny, how hard we can be on ourselves and how we lose all perspective when it comes to our own abilities and work? We can see the good in what others do, we celebrate their achievements and the volume of their work, whatever it is and whatever size that volume happens to be, but we can't help but see our own stuff as 'not up to par,' not good enough. It's so silly, but so difficult to get out of that headspace sometimes. I certainly fall prey to it often ( ... )

It *is* all relative. I'm always blown away by fan artists, for example, because I have absolutely no ability to create visual art. And yet I don't feel like I've done anything at all when I write a fic, because words are (sort of) easy for me.

So thank you. <3 <3

I like to communicate and be a part of interesting conversations, so it's hard to sit here and not be out in the fray... but then this way I love the show and want to write about it and love fandom and want to share what I write with it, so I figure it's best this way. :) Besides, if I only have finite energy, at the end of the day I'd like to expend it writing stories instead of dodging wank. :)

You're great. Thank you. :)

>>I wrote about 450,000 words of fiction in fandom last year.

Geez. Slack much?

Seriously. That's a VERY IMPRESSIVE word count. (I only managed 200,000 words.)

GO YOU!

I don't know if this will help silence some of the invisible scripts -- but writing is *fun*. Therefore it can't possibly be important, or work, or mean enough. Right?

Bull.

You change people's lives with your writing. Touch their hearts. Make them think about things in a new light.

You're important. And what you do, even if you only had a fraction of that VERY IMPRESSIVE wordcount, would still be enough.

::hugs::

I know that fanfic is, for me, an apprenticeship as well as a joy, and it's good for me in so many ways... but the internal voices saying that it's not important enough, that it's not what I should be writing, that I have so many other things in my life that I should do instead, well, they're loud ones.

I thank you, as always, for all of your insight. I think of it - and you - every single day.

WOW! I am woefully behind in my reading, but I stand in such deep admiration for the lovely stories that come from you. I'm so happy you've had this insight into your own productivity. You rock.
