I agree with Kakashi's evaluation that while he can sympathize with her, she has also made herself very unapproachable. Maybe if she hadn't been so icy and closed-off to him when he first entered (in the very beginning, as Kakashi), he would have felt more inclined to ask how she had been. But she put off that very businesslike exterior and was all icy eyes and cold smiles. I hope she realizes this.
