Life is demanding without understanding

Every time I listen to Schizophrenic I hear something that makes me smile.

sherrold linked to this utterly fascinating page of photos and text from a young woman who rides her motorcycle through the "dead zone" of Chernobyl. Apparently those who come for "extreme tourism" can't stand the silence. It's a bit like watching Stalker, which freaked me out ( Read more... )

In other news, the word I've seen misspelled the most times this week is apocalypse, which is fascinating because I didn't think people used it that often. Maybe it's a sign.

Funny, because I routinely misspell San Francisco.

I was forced by my thesis advisor to get with the program and learn to spell apocalypse or die of embarrassment during my defense. That's the only reason I know how to spell it so well.

On the LJ thing, I can dig "read by", but I'm not sure about the "trusted by" - I think that one goes a step beyond "friend of" in terms of the conspiracy minded. I may very well read an LJ of a person I don't like, don't trust, but get endless amount of amusement from. Not that I do that, but I could. ;)

Yeah, that's the new can of worms. :) I think there's talk of breaking it into two separate categories, when/if such a feature is implemented, but frankly I think just "read by" should suffice.

I have to wonder who sat there and thought of "trusted by" though. Was it really an issue of making the LJ more personal that "friend", "trust" or something that illustrates a personal, vested intrest be employed? Odd that.

Thanks for posting to the deadzone website, btw. I just read though it now and it's rather amazing. Gutsy lady to ride though there on her bike.

I think it's about being able to read people's friendslocked entries. Which you can't necessarily do, depending on their filters and so on, so it's a bit misleading as well as unnecessarily intimate.

Isn't that the coolest site? If she had a mailto link, I'd totally propose to her.

I don't fret much about who stops by to read my deathless prose, or who subscribes, short-term or long-term.

You're sane. That must be why I Fiended you (yeah, I spelled it that way on purpose).

I want LJ to institute a system where people can let me read their locked posts (without having to go to the trouble of figuring out the damn filtering system), without them having to read my LJ (or, again, figure out the damn filtering system).

hee! I like fiended. When I'm in a hurry I often write fiendslist, which was just one more reason to abbreviate it to flist. And yeah, if I ever got round to making any locked posts, I'd want a system like that.

I call it my fiendslist on purpose. Of course, that just suits my personality.

Maybe it's just because I'm thinking in terms of computer networks, but "trust relationships" in my mind don't have a thing to do with humans, they have to do with file permissions and executable privileges between computer systems... yes, I am a geek.

See, and I have no context for that, you know? I think that's where it's coming from, but you have to know that your average fan who feels badly about being "unfriended," and can't separate the word from the context, isn't going to feel any better about being untrusted....

Yeah... though I can't think of any context for the verb "unfriend"... not in computers or anything else I know.

No, that does feel like pretty lj-specific terminology. I imagine using it in RL sometimes. "You! I defriend you!" "Huh?"

What if we unsubscribe with a dry towel?

flees

See, I like the term "subscriber." I don't in this lifetime believe it would have really saved any heartache on the part of those who feel heartache about these things, but it would have been more accurate. Reading list, and subscriptions.

And wow, somebody does run yours a lot, don't they? *g* It isn't me, evidence that I just did it to the contrary. I occasionally get bored and plug in various names, but it's been a few months, apparently. No, really.

Put down the towel.

It wasn't me either, but since I can never remember the URL I did used to just click the link in someone's post ('cause I could find that more easily than the URL). Guess I won't be doing that again, if it throws up this kind of weirdness...

Well, I think it just means more regular updates. The program doesn't actually pinpoint the days people add you, just tots up the people who have added/deleted you since the previous update. I suppose if you were thinking to use it as some kind of accurate measure, it would twist that up -- but it's not terribly accurate, to start with. I have people on my f'list that don't show up, and there are others who I've had friended forever, but I don't show up anywhere on their listing. So it's pretty weird to start with. *g*

I'm pretty sure the popularity contest element would still be there regardless, but I feel there would be less assumed intimacy (which I have to say bugs me a bit).

I've had two people fess up so far. I didn't realize this was a hobby! I'm going to have to go run the script for some other people now.

I'm sure this is one of the most stupid things that you have heard lately, but I ran the script once because I couldn't remember the day that I friended you :)

(Indeed, compulsive obsession is spreading like the plague in my country *g*)
