*flails*

So you probably already know this, but. There is stupidity afoot on the internets, and witchqueen's post right here will tell you about it. And some of the comments to her post, and in various other places, will... also be quite telling.

I can't get past *flail* on this one, so for further commentary I'm handing you over to liviapenn's link post, seperis' link post, and ( Read more... )

Oh, man. That whole thread is just... "what, that was the same person? huh!"

*head explodes more*

You know, I had a half a thought and somehow it ended up an entire rant and it wouldn't fit in the comment box *anyway*, and really, it wasn't anything others haven't already said. So I'll say only the obvious -- well, what would appear to be obvious to everyone but the DDmods. Mistakes are one thing. Scorning the best efforts of people to help them fix those mistakes? That's when they go from fixable ignorance to wilful offensiveness. And that's a lot harder to come back from.

Yeah. Sure, it sucks to have to admit that you made an embarrassing mistake and upset people. But to keep right on doing it when someone points it out? Basically, what you said. *flail*

"No offence was intended, but honestly, if sensible people (like you) had alerted us to the fact that there was someone out there who felt really, honestly hurt, then it would have been a quite different matter..."

Is my reading comphrenension shot or did witchqueen not actually wait several days after emailing folks about this before posting on lj? (And I don't recall the email she put in her post reading as unsensible.)

No, I'm pretty sure there's nothing wrong with your reading comprehension. Other people's, now...

Having read a bit more on other ljs, I can kind of see how they may have initially misunderstood the situation. I remember ridiculous flames in other fandoms about really RANDOM stuff, so if they get a fair amount of email like that no matter what the prompt of the month is, combined with maybe reading late at night or something, you can see how someone might initially think 'oh, just another complaint email' if they really hadn't actually READ witchqueen's email. (I'm sure everyone online is familiar with the occasion when you read something but for whatever reason don't really process what it said ( ... )

I admit that I was nodding along with witchqueen's post until I got to the problem word and went *blink* *That's* what prompted this? And it's LESS offensive to use a porn term? English isn't my first language, FWIW, but if I had only received that one initial message I don't think I'd have fully understood the situation.

Now I'm wondering if miscegenation is considered offensive in my country too and I haven't ever realized it or if it has a different history here.

Can I please beat the d_d mod with a cluebat? "I find interracial offensive because I don't believe in races, tralala...why are you complaining about miscegenation again?" Urge to kill...rising...

I was pleased to see when I got up this morning that the mods had changed their policy. But the comments from the mod in that post didn't exactly make things better. I mean, I also wish that we lived in a world where these things don't matter. That would be peachy. As far as I can tell, though, ignoring reality does not so much make it go away.

I think someone actually said it rather succinctly... Being "colourblind" is a white privilege.

It's not entirely correct, but the gist does have emotional truth.
