If I had another penny

I would buy another... fandom, probably.

I wish lj would let me do a multiple-comments reply and send email notifications to everyone in the thread. Oh, well. It's been really interesting, anyway, to see the sensible comments to my plaintive whine about why people think one thing in fanfic threatens or invalidates another. Thank you, smart people ( Read more... )

Aw! Velveteen fandom! It's all fuzzy!

Okay, today I'm not feeling deep.

Me either, obviously. My, that's a splendid icon you've got there. :-)

[grin] Why thank you. Come here often? What's your sign? Sorry, I just got carried away with the concept of shallowness. :)

(And all credit goes to jess79, who made it for me.)

Yeah, I get that sometimes with canon, let alone fanfic. I sit down, watch an episode (coughSpintheBottlecough) and go "Wow that could have been so much better" and occasionally wonder if I'd be better off in the happy world where I can swallow anything as long as it's got heavy slash in it. As you say - sometimes it makes you wonder if you're lacking in imagination or something.

I've always wondered if the people who tangent alert read what I consider poorly constructed and unconvincing fanfic with every evidence of enjoyment have much better imaginative skills and engagement levels than I do
I will sometimes read badly written stories because they give me an element that I rarely find in better written fiction, usually ridiculously long series and/or clan-building. It engages a somewhat different part of my life as a reader than stories with good characterization or excellent plots or beautiful prose.

In the same way, I'm a snob about cheese and orange juice and can really enjoy beautifully cooked vegetables or beef, but there are occasions when what I really, really want to eat is a gas station hot dog with a lot of mustard or a Reese's Peanutbutter Cup and not something from Godiva.

Hey, that's an understandable explanation. Substitute McDonald's french fries for the gas station hot dog and I'm so there. I think it's a sliding scale, though. I'll read stuff where I don't really buy the characterization, etc, if it gives me the right kind of warm fuzzies when I need them, but then there's the completely bizarre stuff with bad spelling and most of the plot done as expositions and sentences that have to be reread five times and I still don't understand half of them... that stuff, too, frequently has a happy-squeaky audience of pairing-fangirls. I guess, if they can manage to actually catch sight of their pairing through all that, more power to 'em. Or something.

Oh dear, the Velveteen Fandom of Borg. I had to make you an icon. *le sigh of amusement*

Dammit, four days in the ether and I missed the smart people!

I think I used to be much more One True Way than I am, anymore. Right? looks nervous That is, I'm not sure I ever bought that there was only one Right Way to write a character, but there were (and still are, I admit) pervasive opinions about some characters that set my teeth on edge, and to my mind, they were seldom supported by what I saw on the show. However, since I've had to admit, more and more, that what I see on the show is seldom the same as what anyone else has seen, I have to admit that probably the views of the characters that drive me crazy are just as valid in some ways as my own perceptions -- as long as they don't run counter to factual info the shows give us ( ... )
