Is there a nifty fannish word for an anti-crossover? You know, when one show references another in a this-is-fiction kind of way. Not that I won't cheerfully ignore that kind of thing if I want to write a crossover anyway, but I think it's kind of entertaining. (I also think it's entertaining when the shows themselves do the crossovers, especially ( Read more... )

I think you should really see it for the funny to get across - there was a young woman who essentially cosplayed Buffy (perky Buffy, early-to-mid-series, you understand). Which doesn't really sound that funny when I write it down. *g*

British soaps all exist in a soap-less universe*: characters from EastEnders never watch Coronation Street, in Coronation Street they never watch Brookside, and no one on Brookside ever switches on to watch EastEnders. And no one ever listens to the Archers. And no one on the Archers ever switches on the telly. (AFAIR. Maybe they watch the news.)

*It's because Brits don't do showers, either. :-)

Heh. And it would be such fun if they all watched each other in a crazy circle... (Is Emmerdale Farm still running?)

I'm sure the show scriptwriters would looooove to call it intertextuality, but I'd call it pop culture eating itself.

Pop WILL eat itself. *crunch* I was just thinking there should be some handy little fandom-internal term, like, "Oh, no, CSI has just whatevered Buffy, now I can't write that great Grissom/Xander romance I was planning!" (Not that I think the whatevering should stop anyone - it's definitely never stopped me. *g*)

I liked the Buffy reference too, though I have to admit that I'm getting tired by seemingly (nearly) every CSI episode featuring some sexual kink or the like for humor/bizarreness ( ... )

Yeah, I liked it better in early seasons when Grissom was the poster boy for "really, these people are no odder than I am" (which, how true, because who is). But Buffy just killed me, with her boots and her voice, hee.

And yes, I think if you start with XF you can get nearly anywhere - XF is like the Kevin Bacon of crossovers.

Have you seen the Tommy Westphall Multiverse? They've got 216 shows linked, with St. Elsewhere as the starting point - http://home.vicnet.net.au/~kwgow/crossovers.html

There's also an LJ comm - tommywestphall.

I don't understand all the deadline-writing-things gathering around christmas, either. December is such a busy month, anyway, what with getting presents for lots of people and other xmasy stuff. NaNoWriMo is in November, too...

Maybe the next big thing will be the Secret Easter Bunny challenges. *g*

Well, there was a midsummer santa that had some incredible stories. Anyway, I'm actually kind of glad all the writing things I'm interested in are in November/December this year, because by next Easter I'll be up to my shoulders in finals, and won't have time or nerves for anything else.
