it ends with revelations

Jul 21, 2005 16:57

Finally played Myst: Revelation all the way through to the end. I abandoned it several months ago just before the final puzzles, and it wasn't until today that I felt I had the time to sit down and relax and concentrate on playing ( Read more... )

Not quite the same, or it would not be as enjoyable.

Good point. :) I think the way I think about it, having the story be by someone else would automatically mean it would be different enough - at least, if I found my dream story, which would by definition be perfect, it would be. *g*

I rarely write what I want to read. Actually, I think I've been attempting to write more of what I like to read in House than other fandoms, but I have a hard time rereading my own stories.

Really, what I like in fanfic, mostly, is long, involved, plotty things, and I cannot do plot to save my life, it seems. *sigh*

Confession: I kind of like rereading my own stories. Some of them, anyway. I think that's an argument for the idea that I do (try to) write what I like to read, at least some of the time, and rereading is a way of figuring out which bits went well and which bits went less well.

Plot is just so much work. I get halfway and then I realize I should have been taking notes all along.

I want to read... well, I want to read the kind of thing I would write if I had better staying power, but I don't, so I want to read the kind of thing I can't produce for myself.

Also I would love to read your dream story. Let me know if you find any close approximations. Especially if it's Harry Potter. Or maybe if Giles is involved. Or... well, obviously I've been reading too much crackfic lately, given some of the places my brain is going. (Giles and Snape? Giles and Indiana Jones? Maybe Daniel Jackson and Giles... mm, geeky.)

Oo. Well, as I said, it could very well be a crossover. Giles and Indiana Jones and Daniel Jackson! Okay, so maybe my dream story isn't crackfic, but scratch Indiana Jones and that could work...

To be honest, my dream story isn't crackfic (or, probably, a crossover) either, I've just been seriously ODing on the fancrack lately.

Really, I wish I /could/ write the kind of novel-length, plot-heavy, UST-laden story I love to read and reread and reread... but, as I said, staying power.

(I thought I had a shot at writing something approximating such a thing in my current fandom, where the series does most of the work for me and thus I could write it as a series of missing scene type things, but then I got distracted by something else that was shiny.)

On the other hand, I /do/ try to write the kind of thing I want to read within the boundaries of what I believe I can do. Pretty much always. (Why else would I write it? Well, okay, if it was the kind of thing that somebody I really liked wanted to read, or if it was an idea that just wouldn't go away damnit.)

Big stories are intimidating. They are nowadays, anyway - I think I've forgotten how to write more than 100K or so.¨

And:

distracted by something else that was shiny

Yup.

I write -- or try to write, anyway -- the kind of stories I want to read. Which is a totally sucky way to go about things, because when they're all done, you know, sure I can read them, but it's just not the same. :( If somebody else had written enough of the sort of fic I wanted, I would never write anything at all, which would be sad 'cos, no writing, but also a good thing 'cos I could just read and read and be happy.

In that case, I'm selfishly glad no one else has written enough of what you want. :)

I think even if the internet was overflowing with dream stories, I'd still write. But probably a lot more slowly...

My dream story is really long, btw. It's heavy on plot, centered on a mystery on some kind; there's an artefact, or maybe several, there might be a museum involved, or a library, or both, theft and/or murder, and a lot of cultural and historical and scientific detail.

You need to read my period mystery, A Cold-Blooded Scoundrel. Will send a free (signed!) copy in exchange for some salt liquorice. :-)

Now there's a very generous offer. :) Are you sure I shouldn't buy the book, to bump up sales? I could send you salt licorice anyway. :)

It doesn't matter - I'm perfectly happy to send you a copy, if you'd like one! :-)
