It's been a pleasure playing again this year. And I'm looking forward to next year's round. A big hug and thank you to our moderator!
Can anyone explain to me what a trope is? None of the translations offered in my dictionary makes sense in connection with FK. The word turned up several times recently and I've meant to ask for a while.
//via Kindle on bus// Like "meme," "trope" has a traditional application in academia and an emerging, related but distinct, connotation in popular culture. I'm sure that your dictionaries are correct for the academic definition!
As popularized by the TV Tropes website, a popular media trope is a conventional situation used frequently in movies and television -- overused, really, by definition. A cliche plot. A well-worn template. A story we have all heard a hundred times, with only the characters and costumes changing. For example, stuck in an elevator. Plane crash. Pretend to be married. Amnesia. Doppleganger. Hostage. People who love tropes may like them straight as cliches, or may have fun turning them on their heads.
(For comparison, in folklore, a hero meeting his future wife at a well is a trope. Three wishes is a trope.)
