Nick walked into the precinct's holiday party with a pretty, pallid blonde on his arm. Natalie froze. Introduced, she shook this Urs's ice-cold hand and deduced that the winter weather was not to blame. Then Nick grinned down, Urs laughed up, and Natalie realized what had been distorting her data on Nick's blood intake. Mouthing some excuse, she fumbled through the crowd to the bitter night outside and cursed herself for having closed that door the one time that Nick had wanted to open it.

When Grace followed, carrying both their coats, Natalie buried her tears in her friend's shoulder.

I love this! Although I want to cry about Natalie's sorrow, I rejoice that Nick appears to be happy. Despite the devastation that is building up for Nat, I enjoyed the way her analytic mind deduces what is "wrong" with Urs and Nick's blood data. Well done!

Thank you so much! I really enjoyed it, and I agree with PJ! Poor Natalie! But I am definitely happy Nick seems happy if with Urs. Now I'm off imaging what happens next, LOL!

Thank you also for the opportunity to explore this scenario. I imagine that it could be fascinating to approach this prompt with parallel but divergent stories: one with an N&Ner route, and one with a LesMis route. (I don't mean to reduce either Natalie or Urs to an existence centered on a love triangle, of course; maintaining what's going on in their lives beyond Nick would make a parallel all the more interesting.)
