I witnessed my near neighbour's form for her and it wasn't a will. This was a 'Do not resuscitate' form as she's terrified that should she start to go blue and start gasping for breath when her eldest daughter is visiting then said daughter will immediately attempt to give her CPR, send her husband out to find the nearest defibrillator and call ( Read more... )

Mystery solved. I find DNRs very strange, I think it is human nature to try and help even if it isn't for the best in the long run

Her parents both ended up in homes and she doesn't want the same experience for herself as she thought their wishes were being disregarded. They had been very ill for a long time and she believed that too much effort was being put into keeping them alive against their personal wishes. Her eldest daughter would do everything she could to revive her but her belief would be that everything would go on as before. My friend has a severe medical condition and, as she used to be a ward sister, is well aware of the potential consequences of such an intervention.

It makes sense, I would feel the same too. I have no interest in being alive just for the sake of it or to be out of it/a burden

My own mother made me swear to 'do her in' if she ever lost her marbles! This was back when I was a teenager so I asked, naturally: "Why me?" "Because you're the only one of my children with the guts to do it!" Of course, I couldn't honour her wishes (which does play on my mind to be honest) but only because I couldn't think of a way of doing it without me ending up in the clink! Waves to Zoe! :)
