Thanks! And yeah, I have a lot of things where I've hesitated a lot and felt a need to read fanfic before writing it, which is ridiculous, especially when I've been in fandoms enough to know how fanfiction works in general, so it's not like it's new to me. And if my writing style/characterization differs from that established fanon standard, so what? Sometimes it can be best to go with the gut reaction/feeling when it comes to writing fic.
Oh, #2 was related to #1.. As in, when you enter a fandom, it is wisest not to go find every dirty smutfic available and read them all in one go. Like it's best to consume more canon than fanon when getting into something new.
Yeah, that's just odd. I mean, to me the best smut takes characterization in consideration and at best is tied to a certain canon moment/period of time (and thus spoilery).. I mean it's odd to think about some character in terms of "What sort of sex would they have?" but if you don't do that then it's a shitty nifty porn story instead of smutty fanfic, in my books anyway.
Semi-relatedly, I think the fandom uber-squee over Caroline/Mac of Green Wing caused me to have this sort of negative reaction to them.
So true! I personally hate the "common" or the "usual" or whatever, and so when an OTP is overdone or hyped, I naturally tend to dislike it without really getting a chance. Which is why I only get into fandom once I've already gotten into canon a bit. But even that can not save me from getting negative. Not to say that I've never loved the OTP, but still...
I still like that pairing, I think, but sometimes with the widely accepted fandom OTPs it's like "Yeah they're great ..but that great? Naaaah." And the non-OTPs can be really great pairings, too, and sometimes you support the underdog because everyone else is so about the damn OTP. I know how that is.
1. Most definitely. It's been my experience that building a solid love of canon first isn't just more fun, but it really helps keep that level of enjoyment up pretty high. I can read all sorts of Bleach fanfic, because I just love the canon so much and I watched it all first before venturing into the online fandom thing for it.
3. I think I'm going to try this whenever I next explore a new fandom.
4. I like mutli-fandom writers. Sometimes if I see someone whose writing I like delve into something else, it encourages me to try a new fandom - which then leads me to enjoy their fic as well as the fandom itself. Sometimes, anyway.
5. Yep.
6. That's for sure. Thank goodness Bleach is an active fandom. ♥
1. I think this is only really tough when the canon isn't available all at once to you - like a new show on air or an old show on re-runs and you have to wait a week to see another episode and can't get the DVDs and yeah, it can be killing. Especially when smut is available & you think, "Hmm it couldn't spoil me that much.." I have like zero self-control with this stuff which is why I had to write this entry to be like, "Okay let's try to be wise with this stuff." :D
Yeah, I actually read Good Omens out of curiosity - everyone seemed to be getting into it all around fandom and some multi-fandom writers I knew of etc. Which is silly but the knowledge of an active fandom was encouraging, even though I never officially participated in the fandom after reading the book.
Very good list! *I don't follow them as often as I should.modillianDecember 11 2006, 05:05:44 UTC
Wheeee, cupiscent! I'm sorry, I kinda fangirl her and embarrass myself in front of her on a semi-regular basis. At least she knows who I am and thinks I'm cute. ;) Needless to say, I heartily support 4, and I learned that one very quickly, within a couple months in fandom.
I should do more of 3, but then the procrastination takes over and I'm doomed. 6 is sad but true. TPM has a few good standby sites, but the dead links just slay me. Coming through via metafandom, hi!

I can't remember how I found Dee (omg freaky & stalkerish, I know her name!) in the first place but it was somehow oddly before my fandom days. Anyway, then I got into some fandom (hmm, Lotrips maybe) and saw she wrote fic and it was good. And since then I keep going back to see what she's doing and usually end up reading something (PoTC, Episode III..) - I've left some fangirly notes so she knows who I am, I think.
And yep, I totally don't obey these often enough. Lack of fic writing on my part is usually explained by me thinking "nah this isn't good enough" about my ideas. And yep, 6 sucks. On the other hand it's fantastic to be involved in a current fandom where everything works better than well but then there's the occasional annoying fandom you get into when it's way past its heyday. Experiencing that with Oz right now, where like 70% of the fic is dead links. :(

Certain anime fandoms are really bad for being full of people who have never seen the show and then go smut crazy. :P
