Eight years ago when Bush was elected, I was too young to vote. Of course, I voted against him in 2004...I voted for John Kerry, who I have to say is a pretty unmemorable guy. Hardly anyone really wanted Kerry to win - they just wanted George W. Bush to lose. I was with them, but Kerry's loss wasn't a surprise, and wasn't that big of a ( Read more... )

watching the world celebrate obama's victory was like watching the expanded credits at the end of the star wars special editions when the death star was blown up. i wonder if the daily show or 236.com will cut a video like that...

as for prop 8--i hate to say it, but i really think you'll realize how important it was. i'm sure it'll get overturned soon, and it wasn't all that close, but it was still a disgrace nonetheless.

Haha, very true. Someone totally should. That thing would go over like gangbusters on YouTube...get to work!

As for Prop 8, I'm not saying it wasn't important, and how great it would have been had it been defeated. And of course, it has larger implications and stands for greater things. But I also think it's important to keep things in perspective. (I heard people say they'd rather see McCain win than Prop pass, which to me is ridiculous.) Essentially, I think we lost the battle and won the war...and the battle isn't over. It's not like gay marriage will be forever banned. I can understand why some people are (justifiably) impatient, but I'm just not one of them. I believe that in my lifetime...and relatively soon...I'll see gay marriage legalized once and for all. I wish it had been today, but it isn't, and I guess I'm just not taking it as hard as many others are.

It's a pleasure to read such an upbeat and hopeful post from you concerning the election. I guess I thought that perhaps the "jaded and cynical" X would not be that attuned to the political world. :)

It really is amazing to feel the mood change. People believe once again that we can be better, that we can return to the ideals that made us admired as a nation. When Obama can even carry the state here in Indiana, it is a sign of some fundamental changes. He faces some daunting challenges, but I believe he has the capability to lead, and I am hopeful for what lies ahead.

As someone whose (side) business it is to bitch about gay rights and talk politics and prognosticate about such things, I was definitely despondent...for about a day. Then yeah, I realized that until June I never even thought gay marriage would be a reality for at least five more years. The timing sucked, but I think the outcome wasn't exactly discouraging. Obama=liberal judges=this will come up again, and as you so rightly said, the age group that is most against gay rights is, well, dying out.

That said, I am glad to see the protests going on even though I am not personally moved enough to skip work to join them (partly because I hate confrontation and also because I'm not hot enough to be a gay single protester and I don't have a husband or boyfriend to legitimize my sexuality...ha!). I like them on principle, and they excite me. They appeal to my baser instinct for revenge/fighting back even if my sense of propriety and moderation bar me from actually participating.
