I guess that I am the odd man out on this one. I tried to think, but I really can't recall ever having that happen to me. My type of music epiphanies happen when I discover a group/artist that I wasn't familiar with, and find that I love thier work. Or, similarly, if there is a group/artist that had one hit played over and over on radio, but then I discover the rest of their work and like it.
I honestly can't think of any time when I experienced something like you describe. Now I feel musically short-changed. :)
You'll get the Beatles someday. I promise. It took me forever. Ditto Miles Davis.
Actually if you listen with an open mind you'll see many many parallels between Kurt's writing and John&Paul's. Simple phrases, crystal-clear structure, tasteful solos (if any), weird noise inserted at the right times. The Beatles were a huge influence on him.
And my favorite songs of his are the acoustic ones. Holy fuck that voice. He smothered it too often. Then he snuffed it out. :-/
