Spam

It sounds silly but I'm really looking forward to trying the 2 cans of Spam my sister gave me for Christmas. She looked over my list of the Omnivore's 100 Meme and gave me two bottles of fruit wine (cherry wine and blueberry wine) and 2 cans of Spam (regular and lite). I'm pretty sure I'll be drinking the wines with lamb and chocolates but not sure ( Read more... )

According to google, it was created in 1926 by Hormel as the first canned meat product, but didn't really become popular until WWII.

Oh, Spam.com says the ingredients are: ham, pork, sugar, salt, water, potato starch, and sodium nitrate.

oooh...thanks for the idea! That sounds good. I have canned pineapple and English muffins in the house. Maybe I'll have a spam and pinapple English muffin so I don't have to make another trip to the grocery store before trying that...

I saw a recipe the other day for Spam sushi... it was rolled with avocado, rice, and seaweed. I hate pork and ham, but I guess that might be good if you feel otherwise. :)

That could be good. I'd have to fry up the spam. I opened a can last night and even though it's already cooked, it looks kinda like dog food right out of the can.

You could probably put it in the fridge for later like any leftover...4 days? I don't know. Everyone has their own standard 0-5 days or if you're my MIL there is no end date.

My family actually loves it in fried rice.

*laugh* Sounds like I'm leaning towards your MIL's attitude towards leftovers. I hate throwing food out. (but I do!)

My absolute favorite way to eat Spam is on top of naengmyeon, a traditional Korean noodle dish. I can't seem to find a good simple recipe online. If you're curious, I'll make it a home and try to get the proportions down. It's basically cold buckwheat noodles in a vinegary, sweet, spicy, and beefy broth topped with hard-boiled eggs and julienned Spam that has been fried up until crisp, brown, and delicious. The Spam isn't traditional but I think it's fabulous because it's so salty and works well.

Filipinos love Spam too, I have no idea why. My parents used to buy it when I was growing up -- if I remember correctly, they'd serve it on fried rice -- but I don't really share their enthusiasm for it.

Heh. I imagine the health aspects alone would make you shy away from Spam. The fat content is impressive!
