Okay, so after the bitch session that was my last entry, a bit of the lighter side.  The final bill for my car repairs was $756, some $80 cheaper than I had anticipated.  So I'm a bit less screwed than I thought I was.  Plus, this week has brought a boon of the best things in life, at least if cliches are to be trusted (and why not?) - the free ( Read more... )

Y'know, I've always respected Roger Ebert. Sure, over the years he's finally started to succumb to Out-Of-Touch-Old-Man syndrome, but he held off much longer than that overrated hag Pauline "I hated STAR WARS" Kael. Even when I've disagreed with him, he usually brought up good points to his point. I respect him for that.

I fucking LOVE him for that DEUCE BIGALOW review, though.

Yeah, the only thing Ebert ever said that really rankled me was that video games are not art because they're interactive. He probably stated it more eloquently, but that was the basis of his argument, anyway. Still, he is forgiven on the basis of his brilliant guest role on The Critic. Which reminds me:

"Jay, it's Rex Reed. I don't care if you DID get the job, because I have a fabulous new partner! (monkey noises in background) That's right! Pauline Kael!"

Yeah, the first listen I gave to the CD was while I was home with my folks. A minute or so into the second track, my dad just cried out, "Oh my God! This is supposed to be Norwegian Wood?!" Of course the review I read thought that one was just brilliant, which proves my point: many music critics are assholes.

Agreed on the second point. Half of the fun of covers is hearing the artist put their own stamp on a song; otherwise, why not just listen to the original?
